Saturday morning at the farmers market near Seacoast in Imperial Beach. A bakery owner had her booth set up, product on the table, and nowhere to be except right there. Then she walked back to her 2009 Wrangler to grab something from inside and the remote wouldn't respond. No lock. No unlock. Nothing.
She tried the key in the door like she hadn't done in years. It turned, so she got in. Then she put the key in the ignition and the engine cranked but stalled out within a second. Security light on the dash. She tried it again. Same thing. Crank, start, die. That's when she started asking around if anyone had a number for a locksmith.

I started with the fob. The CR2032 was completely flat, which explained the dead remote buttons. Swapped it. Remote came back. But the start-and-stall issue was still there, which meant the battery wasn't the whole story. The transponder side had lost its pairing with the immobilizer, likely from a previous failed programming attempt she mentioned someone at an auto parts store had tried.
I connected my programmer through the OBD port, cleared the key memory, and re-enrolled her key to the vehicle. Ran through it twice to confirm the immobilizer was accepting it clean. Then I tested the remote functions, started the engine, let it idle, shut it down, and started it again.
She walked over when she saw it idling. Asked if it was done. I said yeah, test it yourself. She turned the key and it fired right up. She looked almost annoyed it had been that simple to fix once someone with the right equipment showed up.
She finished her market day, packed her booth, and drove home. The dealer would have been a Monday appointment at the earliest, and she would have spent the weekend not knowing if her vehicle was even going to be accessible. That outcome didn't happen because I was already there.
