How long does a Jeep dealer actually take for a replacement key on a 2011 Wrangler?

A job that takes me under an hour on your driveway, in the Bay Marina lot or wherever you're parked, can become a multi-day project at the dealer. The 2011 JK does not require dealer-exclusive tools. That's the part they don't always advertise.

What exactly is a remote head key and how is it different from a regular key?

A remote head key is what your 2011 Wrangler came with from the factory. The key blade inserts into the ignition cylinder the same way any traditional key does, but the head of the key is larger because it houses a transponder chip and a small remote with four buttons for lock, unlock, and other functions.

The transponder chip is the part that matters most for starting. When you turn the ignition, the immobilizer reads the chip. If the code doesn't match what the vehicle has on file, the engine either won't crank or it will start and immediately die. A key that is cut correctly but not programmed will do exactly that.

The remote buttons are a separate circuit. It's possible for the buttons to stop working while the transponder still communicates fine, which means the Wrangler will still start even if the remote functions go dead. Those are two different problems with two different fixes.

Why does replacing a Jeep key take the dealer so long when the actual programming seems quick?

Three things slow them down. Parts availability is the first. Fobs often aren't sitting on a shelf, so they get ordered by VIN and the customer waits. Second, programming ties up a tech and a bay for a billed labor block even if the key learn itself runs in minutes. Third, at a combined CDJR store, the service lane isn't dedicated just to Jeep. You're sharing a queue with every other brand that store covers.

For a 2011 JK specifically, none of that is your problem when you go the mobile route. The programming doesn't require factory credentials or a dealer-network tool. I show up with what I need, and the job gets done where the vehicle sits.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself to my 2011 Wrangler?

No self-programming sequence exists for the remote head key on this generation. There's no ignition-turn cycle or button trick that will register a new transponder to the immobilizer. That onboard relearn method exists on some older vehicles with basic key setups, but the 2011 JK needs a programmer connected to the OBD port to write the new key into the system.

If you already bought a fob online, that's fine. As long as it's the correct part for a 2011 Wrangler, I can program it on site. Bring the fob and I handle the rest. You don't need to buy the key through me to get the programming done.

Starts-then-stalls is a classic immobilizer symptom. The engine fires on the mechanical crank, then the security system cuts fuel or spark within a second or two because it didn't get a valid transponder signal.

On the 2011 JK, this usually points to one of three things: the transponder chip in the key has failed, the key was never properly programmed or lost its registration, or there's a problem with the receiver that reads the chip. A dashboard warning related to the key or security system showing up alongside the stall narrows it toward the transponder side. If the dash is clean and the stall is random, the receiver or wiring is worth looking at.

Either way, it's something I diagnose on site. Don't ignore a starts-and-stalls pattern. Driving on a compromised transponder link is a tow-truck call waiting to happen.
