Guy had walked down to catch an early connection and come back to a Wrangler that wouldn't respond to his fob at all. No locks, no lights, nothing.
He had one key. He'd never used the blade side of it to manually unlock the door because he'd never needed to. So he didn't even know the lock cylinder was right there under the handle cap. He just stood there clicking the remote at it.
He called the dealer first. They pushed him to Monday, and this was Wednesday morning. He had a pharmaceutical sales route starting in under two hours, first client two cities over. Swapped the CR2032, reseated it clean, and it came back immediately. The transponder had been fine the whole time, the car had been starting without complaint. It was only the remote side that had gone dark.
I walked every button with him before I left. Checked lock, unlock, and the other two. All solid. Gave him a spare CR2032 for the center console so he's not back in the same spot six months from now.
He made his first sales call that morning. The dealer was going to cost him a tow, a five-day wait, and a lot more money than he spent with me.
