2009 Jeep Compass
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2009 Jeep Compass Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call on a Saturday morning from a guy over in San Diego Country Estates, out by Ramona.

He was in the middle of a move, working out of a self-storage yard, and somewhere between the third and fourth trip to his unit he lost track of the only key to his 2009 Jeep Compass. It was in a box. He knew it was in a box. He just didn't know which one, and he'd already stacked most of them in the back of the Jeep.

The facility locked the gates at six. His moving help was on the clock. Digging through every box wasn't really an option.

I was there within the hour. The Compass takes a remote head key, blade and fob together as one piece, and this was an all-keys-lost situation, which means I couldn't just add onto an existing working key. I decoded the door lock to get the key cut right, ran the job through the OBD port with my programmer to enroll the new key into the immobilizer, and tested every button on the four-button fob before I handed it over. Remote lock, unlock, the works.

He asked if the old key would still work if he found it later. I told him the procedure I used adds the new key without wiping previous ones, so if it surfaces in a box next week it'll still start the car. That seemed to take some weight off.

He was back to moving in under an hour from when I arrived. He mentioned the dealer had quoted him something that would have taken until Monday and cost him a lot more than what I charged. But honestly, the dealer wait was the bigger problem. Monday doesn't help when the gate locks at six.
