I got a call from a guy out at The Crosby in Rancho Santa Fe. He had been hiking one of the trails off the property and was pretty sure his key had fallen out somewhere on the way back. His 2023 Jeep Compass was sitting in the lot and he had nothing.
He told me he had already called another locksmith. That locksmith told him the ignition would need to be drilled and the cylinder replaced. The quote scared him enough to call someone else.
I drove out to The Crosby and got there while he was still standing next to the Compass in the afternoon heat. I decoded his door lock by reading the wafer positions inside the cylinder. No drilling, nothing forced, nothing replaced. I got the cut data I needed from the lock itself. From there I cut a replacement blade, built out the smart key, and ran the all-keys-lost sequence through the OBD port. The gateway module on these requires the right access approach, which I had ready. New key paired, old key erased so it cannot start the vehicle if it ever turns up somewhere random.
His original lock still works. The cylinder looks exactly the way it did when I arrived. He asked me about the drilling story the other locksmith told him. I just showed him the lock with no marks on it.
He saved a good chunk compared to what the other guy wanted, and he was back on his way in under an hour.
