2011 Jeep Compass
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Can you erase lost or stolen keys from my 2011 Compass so they no longer start it?

Yes. When we run a full key programming session on the 2011 Compass, the process wipes all previously stored key data from the immobilizer and only registers the keys physically present during that session. Any key that is not there, whether lost, stolen, or just unaccounted for, gets erased and will not start the vehicle afterward. We verify the erase before we leave. You watch both new keys start the engine, and you know the old ones are gone.

Q: Does my 2011 Jeep Compass key have a hidden emergency blade I can use if the fob stops working?

The 2011 Compass uses a remote head key, which means the blade is already built into the fob body and goes directly into the ignition. There is no hidden or folding emergency blade separate from the main unit. The blade is the key. If your fob battery dies, the blade still turns the ignition and the lock cylinder as normal since those are purely mechanical functions. The remote buttons just stop working until you swap the CR2032.

Q: I replaced the battery in my 2011 Compass fob but the range is still terrible. What is going on?

A few things cause this on these remote head keys. First, check that the CR2032 is seated flat and the battery cover is fully clicked shut. A slightly loose cover leaves the battery contact inconsistent. Second, look at the rubber button pads. If any button is cracked or sunken, moisture can get in and corrode the circuit board contacts inside the fob housing. That corrodes the antenna trace and kills range even with a fresh battery.

Q: My 2011 Compass starts fine but the key warning light stays on after the engine is running. Should I be worried?

If the engine is running normally, a lingering key warning indicator is usually a communication issue between the fob and the vehicle security system rather than a hard immobilizer fault. Common causes on this generation include a weak fob battery that authenticates just barely on startup, a worn ignition cylinder that is not reading the transponder element cleanly, or a stored fault code in the body electronics that has not been cleared. Start with the battery.

2011 Jeep Compass Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a chiropractor working out of his office in Old Town National City. Before he dialed, he'd already looked up my license on the BSIS site. He was direct about it: he told me the first thing he said was that he'd verified I was real before calling.

He had a 2011 Jeep Compass and needed a spare key made. His previous locksmith experience had gone badly. No license number on the receipt, the fob failed inside a month, and the callback number went nowhere. He wasn't upset when he called me. He was just careful.

I drove out to his office. The job was a spare remote head key, the kind that goes right into the ignition. I cut the blade to his vehicle, confirmed the blade operated the door lock cylinder manually, then connected through the OBD port and ran the programming sequence. Both his original and the new spare ended up registered and confirmed working.

The part that mattered to him wasn't the speed. It was that I handed him a receipt with my actual license number on it, the one he'd already looked up, and told him the same phone number on the invoice is the one I answer. He said the price difference compared to the dealer quote was significant, but honestly he said the accountability was the bigger thing. He just wanted to know someone would pick up if the key had a problem next week.

That's the whole job. Cut it right, program it right, leave a number that works.

Jeep Compass Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2011 Jeep Compass?▼

Call a mobile locksmith who works on these vehicles before you call the dealer or a tow company. All-keys-lost on the 2011 Compass requires going through the OBD port to re-register new keys to the immobilizer, since there are no keys present to authenticate the session. A dealer will typically have you tow the vehicle in, schedule a programming appointment, and wait on parts. That process can stretch into days.
