2012 Audi A5
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will the replacement key last?

The programming itself does not expire. Once a key is registered to the car it stays registered, battery or no battery. The fob battery just powers the remote signal for lock and unlock. The transponder chip that communicates with the immobilizer draws power from the car's own reader coil, so even a dead battery in the fob still lets you start the car. Physically, the flip mechanism on these A5 fobs is the first thing to wear.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call me. The work is covered. That said, on these older Audi immobilizer systems, a key that worked and then suddenly stopped is more often a car-side issue than a key issue. A weak or dying vehicle battery is the most common culprit. The immobilizer reader coil and the body control module both need stable voltage to communicate properly with the fob.

Q: My 2012 A5 starts fine but the remote lock and unlock stopped working. Do I need a new key?

Probably not. If the car starts, the transponder chip is communicating correctly. The remote RF side is a separate circuit. First thing to check is the fob battery. A low battery on these fobs causes exactly this symptom: the car starts normally but the buttons do nothing or only work from a few inches away. Swap the battery, make sure the contacts inside are clean and making solid contact, and retest.

Q: Can I have a second key made for my 2012 A5 if I still have one working key?

Yes, and it is the easiest version of this job. The 2012 A5 immobilizer generation allows a spare key to be added without wiping the existing key. I read the immobilizer data, generate a matched transponder, cut the blade, and register the new key alongside the one you already have. Both work after. The whole job typically runs well under an hour when a working key is present.

2012 Audi A5 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A shop in Santee, right near Carlton Hills, had a 2012 Audi A5 up on the lift with the wheels pulled. The owner had dropped the customer's only key off at the counter, it slid off the pegboard, and went straight into a floor drain. Car on the lift, no key, customer due back in two hours.

The shop owner called me while I was already out in the area.

When I got there, the situation was simple enough: one key lost, car immobile, clock running. I pulled the immobilizer PIN through the OBD port using my VAG-capable diagnostic setup, generated a replacement transponder, and cut a new blade to match. The whole process stayed under thirty minutes because the 2012 A5 sits in an older immobilizer generation where PIN extraction through OBD is a clean, stable process. No bench work, no module removal, no tow.

The shop got the wheels back on. The customer picked up the car on time and had no idea anything had gone sideways.

The dealer would have needed the car towed in, scheduled a tech, and had the customer waiting days. The shop owner saved his customer a serious headache, and I was back on the road before the lift even came down.

Audi A5 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Audi vehicles?▼

For the 2012 A5, aftermarket fob shells and blades work fine as long as the transponder chip inside is the correct spec. This generation does not have the component protection system that newer Audi platforms introduced, so it is not as strict about rejecting non-OEM electronics. That said, I still use quality housings and verified transponder chips, not the cheapest blanks available. The programming is only as reliable as the hardware holding it.
