How QX60 Key Technology Changed by Generation
Smart Key - First Generation (2014-2016)
Infiniti built the original QX60 around a proximity smart key that works with a push-to-start ignition. The key carries a transponder chip inside and communicates with the factory immobilizer every time you start the engine. It has three buttons, a folding emergency blade for manual door entry, and runs on a CR2032 battery. Programming is done through the OBD-II diagnostic port under the dash, right there in your driveway. We connect dealer-grade programming equipment to your car's computer and register the new key on the spot.
Smart Key - Mid-Generation Refresh (2017-2020)
Infiniti refreshed the electronics on these model years while keeping the same basic smart key design. The key still has three buttons, a high-security blade, and a CR2032 battery, and it still communicates with the factory immobilizer through the OBD-II port. The difference is under the hood: the updated software requires PIN retrieval before a new key can be registered. We carry everything needed to handle that on-site, so the price you get quoted is the price you pay when the job is done.
Smart Key - Final First-Generation Year (2021)
The 2021 QX60 wraps up the first generation with the same transponder chip and factory immobilizer carried over from earlier models. Programming still runs through the OBD-II port. One thing worth knowing upfront: all-keys-lost situations on these later first-generation models can sometimes require dealer server authorization to complete. We tell you whether that applies to your specific vehicle before we commit to a price or roll out to your San Diego County location. No guesswork after the fact.
Smart Key - Second Generation (2022-2024)
The redesigned QX60 brought a significant change to key security. Programming these models requires a live connection to Infiniti's servers for final authentication, which is a different process than earlier generations. We handle key cutting and preparation on-site, but we are straightforward with you from the first call: the 2022-2024 models need dealer server access to complete programming. You will know exactly what is involved and what it costs before any work begins. That is how we do things.

Which Key Does Your QX60 Use?
A push-to-start smart key that the car detects when you approach and grab the door handle. Keep it in your pocket or bag and the QX60 handles the rest. A hidden emergency blade folds inside for manual door entry when the CR2032 battery runs low.
Same three-button smart key layout as the earlier QX60, with lock, unlock, and liftgate controls. The internal electronics were updated on these model years, so the programming software differs even though the key looks nearly identical to the 2014-2016 version.
The final version of the first-generation smart key. Three buttons, CR2032 battery, same day-to-day function as earlier models. Minor firmware differences on some units can affect all-keys-lost programming, which is something we check before quoting you a price.
The second-generation QX60 uses a redesigned smart key with a newer transponder chip and server-based security. Still three buttons and a CR2032 battery, but programming requires live Infiniti server authorization rather than a purely on-site process.

Common QX60 Key Problems
Smart Key Fob Battery Drain
The proximity sensors inside your QX60 fob are almost always the reason the CR2032 battery dies faster than expected. When the key is stored close to the vehicle, such as on a hook near where you park, the key and the car keep pinging each other and drain the battery between uses. Move the key at least ten feet from the car when you are home. If you are swapping batteries every few months, that is the likely cause.
Transponder Sync Failure
You swapped the battery or jump-started the car, and now the push-button start will not respond. The remote still locks and unlocks the doors fine, but the engine will not turn over. This happens when the factory immobilizer loses its sync with the transponder chip. It is a common call we get from drivers across San Diego County on 2014-2022 models. A key relearn through the OBD-II port fixes it, and we do that on-site.
Immobilizer Communication Errors
Many QX60 owners assume this means the key is the problem. Usually it is not. The factory immobilizer module can lose communication with the diagnostic port, which blocks all-keys-lost programming entirely. This affects 2017-2024 models and often calls for an ECU reset or PIN code extraction before a new key can be registered. We bring the tools to diagnose this at your location so you know exactly what the job involves and what it costs before we start.
Can You Program a QX60 Key at Home?
No self-programming option exists for the 2014-2016 QX60. The factory immobilizer requires professional diagnostic equipment to register a new smart key. There is no workaround, and attempting it without the right tools will not get you anywhere.
Same answer for the 2017-2020 models. Infiniti did not build any DIY key programming into the QX60. Professional OBD-II tools and PIN retrieval are required, which means a locksmith or dealer.
Still no onboard programming option for the 2021 QX60. These late first-generation models may also need dealer server authorization when all keys are lost, which adds a step that a professional has to handle.
The 2022-2024 QX60 requires live server authentication for key programming. There is no DIY path on these models at all. Professional tools with a live server connection are the only option.

Did You Know?
The factory immobilizer in your QX60 traces its roots to a Nissan security system that dates back to the 1990s. Every time you start the engine, your key and the car exchange a coded challenge-and-response sequence. If the codes do not match, the engine will not fire regardless of whether the key physically turns. It is the same basic cryptographic principle used in secure communications, just scaled down to fit inside a key fob.
