G37 Key Security, Generation by Generation
V36 Coupe (Early)
Your early G37 coupe uses a 3-button smart key with an ID46 transponder chip and Infiniti's NATS immobilizer system. Push-button start was standard on higher trims, and the emergency blade inside the fob is a high-security laser-cut design. Programming requires OBD-II access to the Body Control Module, so this is not a DIY job.
V36 Coupe/Sedan (Mid)
Your 2010 or 2011 G37 carries the same ID46 chip and NATS immobilizer as the earlier coupe, now available across both coupe and sedan body styles. The 3-button smart key with push-button start is standard. IPL trims may have a unique fob appearance, but the programming process is identical.
V36 Facelift
Your facelift G37 keeps the same proven setup: ID46 chip, NATS immobilizer, 3-button smart key with high-security blade. Infiniti made minor cosmetic updates but left the key system alone. Same OBD-II programming, same CR2032 battery, same process we have been doing since 2008.
V36 Convertible
Your G37 convertible with the retractable hardtop uses the exact same smart key system as the coupe and sedan. ID46 chip, NATS immobilizer, 3-button fob, high-security blade. The convertible top adds complexity to the car, but the key situation is straightforward.
What Key Does Your G37 Actually Use?
A thick black fob with the Infiniti logo, lock, unlock, and trunk buttons. There is a hidden emergency blade inside that slides out for manual door entry.
Same smart key design as the earlier coupe. Black fob with chrome trim, three buttons, and a concealed high-security blade for emergencies.
Identical fob to the earlier years. Infiniti kept the same key design through the end of the G37 run. Three buttons, CR2032 battery, hidden blade.
The convertible shares its smart key with the coupe and sedan. Same fob, same blade, same battery. No differences in the key itself.

Problems We See on the Infiniti G37
Smart Key Battery Failure
First check Marco runs on a 'will not start, doors will not unlock' G37: the CR2032 inside the fob. V36 Intelligent Key keeps antennas live, draining the cell fast on coastal San Diego cars. Battery curbside, then OBD-II if needed.
NATS Immobilizer Sync Loss
People assume a new fob battery will fix everything, but on 2010-2013 G37s, swapping the battery can knock the transponder out of sync with the NATS immobilizer. Your key looks fine, the battery is fresh, but the car will not recognize it. This requires an OBD-II relearn procedure to re-register the key with the Body Control Module.
High-Security Blade Wear
Your G37's emergency blade starts sticking in the door cylinder, or it will not turn smoothly anymore. That laser-cut high-security blade wears down over time, if you use it regularly for manual entry. We cut a fresh blade on-site using precision equipment, matched to lock.
Proximity Sensor Failure
The door handle sensors on 2011-2013 G37s can fail, which means passive entry stops working though fob is fine. This is an electrical issue in the door handle, not a key problem. We can confirm whether the issue is key or the sensor so you know what needs fixing before spending money.
Can You Program a G37 Key on Your Own?
No self-programming option exists for this generation. The NATS immobilizer requires professional diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD-II port to register new smart keys.
Same story here. You cannot add or program smart keys without professional tools that can communicate with the Body Control Module through OBD-II.
Infiniti did not add any self-programming capability to the facelift models. Professional OBD-II equipment is the only way to get a new smart key registered.
The convertible uses the same NATS system as the coupe and sedan. No DIY option. You need a locksmith or dealer with OBD-II programming capability.

One More Thing
Most San Diego G37 owners do not realize Infiniti shipped the V36 convertible with the exact same Intelligent Key the coupe and sedan use. Same ID46 chip, same NATS handshake, same CR2032 battery. So when the convertible top hardware drains the 12V in Coronado salt air and the immobilizer drops sync, the fix is identical to what Marco does on a coupe in Escondido. Same tool, same procedure, same hour.
