Yes, and this is actually a known weak spot on the G37 Intelligent Key. The plastic around the key ring bridge is thin, and it cracks over time from the weight of other keys pulling on it. The good news is the original circuit board, the one already enrolled with your immobilizer, transfers directly into a replacement shell. As long as the board itself is intact and undamaged, no reprogramming is needed. I also cut a fresh emergency insert blade to your vehicle at the same time, since the old blade usually shows wear by the time the shell gives out. It is one of the more affordable key jobs I do on Infinitis because you are paying for a shell, a blade cut, and careful hands, not a full programming sequence.

What exactly is the Intelligent Key and why does it need programming?

The Intelligent Key on your 2012 G37 is a proximity fob with an embedded transponder. The vehicle's immobilizer only authorizes the engine to start when it recognizes a fob that has been enrolled in its memory. A blank fob, even one that's the correct shape and button count, gets rejected until it goes through that enrollment process.

The four buttons handle lock, unlock, trunk release, and panic. There's also an emergency insert blade folded inside the fob for situations where the battery dies and you need to physically unlock the door.

Programming has to happen through the OBD port with a compatible tool. There is no self-service sequence for adding a smart key on this system. That's not a dealer upsell, it's just how the immobilizer works on this generation.

Question 3

My G37 is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I check first?

Start with the CR2032. A weak battery is the most common reason that warning shows up, and the G37 fob gives very little advance warning before it drops off. Swap the battery, make sure the contacts are clean, and try again.

If that doesn't fix it, hold the fob directly against the start button with your foot on the brake. The antenna built into the button can read the transponder at close range even when the battery is too low to broadcast normally. That trick will at least tell you if the fob is still enrolled.

If the car battery went dead recently, or if you had work done that disconnected power, the immobilizer can lose its pairing with the fob. The fob is fine in that case, but it needs to be re-enrolled. That is a tool job, not a battery swap. Call me if you get to that point.

I bought a replacement fob online for my G37. Will it work once I put a battery in it?

No. A fob that hasn't been programmed is just plastic with buttons. The 2012 G37 immobilizer won't recognize it at all until it gets enrolled through the OBD port with a programming tool. The online fob market is full of blanks sold as "replacement" fobs, and a lot of G37 owners find this out the hard way after the purchase.

What you have is actually fine as a starting point. Bring the fob and the car to me, and I can enroll it on site. You saved on the part cost, I handle the programming. That's a reasonable split.

Can a dead car battery cause my G37 to stop recognizing the key even after the battery is recharged?

It can. This comes up on G37 forums regularly. A complete power loss, especially one where the battery sat fully discharged for a while, can cause the immobilizer to drop its stored fob data. When power comes back, the car may act like it has never seen your key before.

The fob itself hasn't changed. It's still the same enrolled fob it always was. But if the immobilizer lost its memory, it needs the fob re-registered before it will authorize a start. Owners often assume the fob failed or that the immobilizer module is damaged. Usually it's neither. It's a re-enrollment job, done through the OBD port, and it resolves the issue cleanly.

If your G37 cranks but won't fire, or starts and immediately stalls after a dead battery event, that points to this kind of immobilizer interruption. That's something I diagnose and handle on site.
