2009 Infiniti G37
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how does the 2009 G37 use one?

The G37 uses an Intelligent Key system. The fob communicates wirelessly with antennas built into the door handles and the cabin so the car knows you are nearby. It also contains a transponder that pairs with the vehicle's immobilizer to authorize the engine to start. The fob has four buttons for remote functions. What that means practically: even a brand-new fob purchased online is a paperweight until it gets programmed to your specific car through the OBD port.

Q: My G37 is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I check first?

Start with the CR2032 battery in the fob. A weak cell is the most common cause of key-not-detected warnings on these, and it can produce symptoms that feel more serious than they are, like the door handle touch-unlock failing while the car still starts, or range dropping to a few inches. If a fresh battery does not clear it, hold the fob directly against the push-button start with your foot on the brake.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2009 G37. Can you still make a replacement, or do I need to go to the dealer?

All-keys-lost on the G37 is a standard job. It does not require a dealer. The process involves clearing the existing key registrations through the OBD port and enrolling the new fob from scratch. Because all prior keys get wiped during that reset, any lost fobs will no longer start the car afterward, which is worth knowing if you are concerned about security. A new emergency blade gets cut to the vehicle at the same time.

Q: The touch-unlock on my driver door handle stopped working but everything else seems fine. Is my fob dying?

Probably not the fob. If the push-button start still recognizes the key and the passenger handle still responds, the fob is communicating with the car just fine. On the G37, the door handle touch sensors can fail or get interference from buildup around the sensor area. Wipe down the handle and retest. If the problem stays isolated to one door after that, you are most likely looking at the touch sensor or wiring on that door, not the key.

2009 Infiniti G37 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was over near RB Town Center on a Tuesday when I got the call. The owner had a 2009 Infiniti G37 and a fob that had been acting up for a few weeks, intermittent key-not-detected on the dash, touch unlock on the driver door going unreliable, and then one morning it just stopped being recognized entirely.

He mentioned he had already watched some of my videos online. He said he figured the Infiniti and Nissan smart key process were close enough that he had a rough idea what I would do. He was not wrong about that.

When I got there he handed me the fob. The shell had a hairline crack running from the keyring loop down toward the seam. Not unusual on these. I popped it open on the hood to check the board and battery contacts before assuming anything else was wrong. The CR2032 was low, and one of the contact clips had a slight deformation, probably from the shell flexing over time.

I built a fresh fob, registered it through the OBD port, and transferred the emergency blade. Then I did what I always do: walked every function. Touch unlock on both handles, all four buttons, three clean starts, and a range check from across the parking lot.

Everything came back clean. He asked what the dealer would have quoted. I told him I had no idea what they would charge today, but I knew what he paid me, and it was a fraction of what they wanted.

No dispatch, no call center. Same person from the videos, same tools, at your car.

Infiniti G37 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key shell is cracking. Can you fix it without reprogramming?▼

Yes, and on the G37 this comes up regularly. The fob shells on this generation are known to crack at the keyring bridge and along the emergency blade housing, especially on fobs that have been on a heavy keychain for years. As long as the original circuit board and battery contacts are intact, we transfer everything into a new shell and cut a fresh emergency blade to match. No reprogramming needed because the registered electronics stay the same.
