Which Key Does Your FX35 Take?
A physical key with a high-security blade and a transponder chip inside the head. You insert it into the ignition, and the factory immobilizer reads the chip before allowing the engine to start. No remote proximity, no push-button start.
A proximity fob that rides in your pocket. The FX35 detects it when you reach for the door handle and lets you start with a button press. A folded emergency blade is built in for dead-battery situations.
Looks and works the same as the 2009-2010 smart key, with the same push-button start and the same hidden emergency blade. The difference is under the hood on our end: programming requires an additional server authentication step that not every locksmith can handle.
How FX35 Key Technology Evolved by Year
Transponder Key Era (2003-2008)
The 2003-2008 FX35 uses a physical high-security key you insert into the ignition. Inside the key head sits a transponder chip that communicates with the factory immobilizer every time you turn it. No push-button start on these. The upside for you: programming is straightforward and can be done on-board without connecting to outside servers, which means we can handle it entirely at your location.
Smart Key, First Round (2009-2010)
Infiniti shifted to a proximity-based smart key for 2009 and 2010. The fob stays in your pocket and the FX35 recognizes it as you approach. Press the button, and you're in. Press the brake and the start button, and you're moving. There's a hidden emergency blade folded inside for when the CR2032 battery goes flat. Programming requires OBD-II access and a PIN code, which we pull before we leave the shop so there's no delay on arrival.
Smart Key, Added Security (2011-2012)
The 2011 and 2012 FX35 looks identical to the earlier smart key from the outside, but the programming process is more involved. Infiniti added a layer of server authentication on top of OBD-II access, meaning the vehicle's computer may need to verify the new key remotely before it accepts it. We carry dealer-grade programming equipment, including the Xhorse Condor for blade cutting, to handle that process on-site without sending you anywhere.

Can You Program an FX35 Key at Home?
On a 2003-2008 FX35, you can program the remote buttons yourself using an ignition cycle sequence. Insert and remove the key several times quickly until the hazards flash, then press the lock button on the fob. That syncs the lock, unlock, and panic functions. What it does not do is program the transponder chip that actually lets the engine start. That step requires professional equipment. Skip it and your key will lock the doors but leave you sitting there.
No DIY path exists for the 2009-2010 smart key. Both the proximity function and the transponder require OBD-II diagnostic access and a PIN code. A dealer or a qualified locksmith is your only option for the full programming job.
Same situation for 2011-2012, with an extra layer on top. Server authentication is required in addition to OBD-II access, which means even some locksmiths can't complete it without the right dealer-grade programming equipment. We carry what's needed specifically for these later FX35s.

Common FX35 Key Problems We See in San Diego
Immobilizer Not Recognizing the Key
You turn the key, the engine cranks, but it won't fire and the security light blinks. On 2003-2008 FX35s, the factory immobilizer can stop recognizing the transponder chip due to a weak signal or a communication fault between the key and the ignition antenna ring. We start by testing the transponder output. If the chip reads correctly, we check the antenna ring next. Reprogramming the key to the vehicle's computer resolves it the majority of the time without swapping any hardware.
Smart Key Fob Battery Draining Fast
The CR2032 in your 2009-2012 smart key can drain quicker than you'd expect. The proximity system continuously pings the fob, and keeping it near other electronics or inside a metal bag makes it worse. Before assuming anything else is wrong, we check battery voltage first, because a low battery mimics more serious faults. A fresh CR2032 solves the problem roughly half the time and costs almost nothing.
Worn High-Security Blade
The FX35 uses a high-security sidewinder-style blade that sees a lot of wear, especially on 2003-2008 models where the key goes into the ignition every single start. Over time the blade sticks, feels rough, or eventually snaps inside the cylinder. We inspect the blade before recommending anything new, and we cut replacements on the Xhorse Condor for an exact fit. If the original is too worn to copy from, we can decode your locks on-site and cut from spec.
ECM Programming Lockout
This one looks like an electrical failure but almost always traces back to a previous programming attempt gone wrong. On 2011-2012 FX35s, using an incompatible tool or entering the wrong sequence can lock the vehicle's computer against accepting any new keys. Once that happens, it takes dealer-grade programming equipment with server calculation support to clear and reprogram. If someone already triggered a lockout on your FX35 somewhere in San Diego County, give us a call and we'll sort it out on location.

Did You Know?
Back in 2003, Infiniti equipped the FX35 with factory immobilizer technology that was ahead of most luxury SUVs at the time. The transponder chip used encryption that was genuinely difficult to defeat for its era, which was unusual for a vehicle in this class. Most competitors were still relying on simpler security setups, and Infiniti's decision pushed the FX35 out front on theft deterrence from the first model year.
