Which Key Does Your EX35 Use?
A proximity smart key with push-button start. Keep it in your pocket and the car recognizes it as you approach. There is a laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside the fob body that fits a hidden keyhole on the driver's door handle for manual entry when the battery is dead.
Same design as the early models. Walk up, pull the handle, press the button and go. The fob runs on a CR2032 coin cell. Plan on swapping it every couple of years to avoid intermittent no-start situations in a parking lot.
Final year, same key. Three buttons, proximity sensing, push-button start. If the battery dies completely, hold the fob flat against the start button while pressing the brake and the car will draw enough residual power from the fob to get the engine running.
The EX35 Key System Through the Years
Smart Key Era - Early (2008-2009)
Infiniti put push-button start on every EX35 from day one. The 2008 and 2009 models shipped with a 3-button smart key, a transponder chip inside the fob, and the factory immobilizer working behind the scenes. The fob runs on a CR2032 coin cell that typically holds up for two to three years. One thing that works in your favor on these early models: the remote functions can be paired through an on-board key-cycle procedure, though the transponder still needs a professional with the right equipment to make the car start.
Smart Key Era - Mid Cycle (2010-2011)
The 2010 and 2011 EX35 kept the same 3-button smart key and factory immobilizer setup as the earlier cars. Infiniti updated the transmission that year, but the key system did not change in any meaningful way. What did change for owners needing a new key is that the on-board remote pairing trick no longer works. Every aspect of key programming on these years requires a technician with dealer-grade programming equipment connected to the OBD-II port. There is no shortcut.
Smart Key Era - Final Year (2012)
The 2012 EX35 closed out the model on a consistent note. Same smart key, same factory immobilizer, same high-security laser-cut blade. For all-keys-lost situations, PIN code retrieval is a required step before any new key can be programmed. The blade also demands a precision laser cutter to get the cuts right. If you are in San Diego County and locked out or starting from zero keys, same-day service is available.

Common EX35 Key Problems in San Diego
Smart Key Battery Drain
The smart key is always listening for the car, even when the vehicle sits parked in your driveway or a lot near the I-5. That constant proximity polling burns through the CR2032 faster than most owners expect. A weak battery usually shows up first as intermittent no-start conditions rather than a fob that just stops working entirely. We can test the fob's output on-site and replace the key if the battery is too far gone to save.
Immobilizer Sync Loss
Your key stops starting the car and the security light on the dash is blinking. This catches a lot of San Diego EX35 owners off guard after a dead car battery or a jump-start. The key can lose its learned relationship with the factory immobilizer when power is interrupted, and getting it back requires a full relearn procedure through the OBD-II port. We handle it on-site. No tow needed anywhere in San Diego County.
High-Security Blade Wear
When your door lock starts sticking or the blade feels stiff to turn, the fob itself is rarely the problem. The laser-cut emergency blade on 2010 through 2012 models wears down with regular use, and even minor changes in cut depth can cause the mechanical lock to bind or refuse to turn. We carry a precision laser cutter on every call and can produce a fresh blade that matches the original specifications on the spot.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the Infiniti Dealer
We bring dealer-grade programming equipment directly to your driveway. Same capability, no appointment, and typically around half what the dealer charges for the same job.
Can You Program an EX35 Key Yourself?
On 2008 and 2009 models, there is a key-cycle procedure that will pair the lock and unlock buttons on a new fob. It sounds like a full solution but it only covers the remote entry functions. The transponder chip still needs professional OBD-II programming before the car will start. So you can handle half the job yourself, but you will still need a locksmith to finish it.
No DIY path exists for 2010 and 2011 models. Even pairing the remote buttons requires a technician with diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD-II port. Do not waste money on aftermarket fobs that claim otherwise. They will not program the transponder chip and the car will not start.
The 2012 EX35 is the same story as 2010 and 2011. All key programming requires professional tools. There is no on-board self-programming procedure available for the final model year.

Did You Know?
Most people do not know this: the EX35 shares its platform with the Nissan 370Z. Infiniti took a sports car foundation, raised the ride height, wrapped it in a luxury interior, and added a hatchback body to create a compact crossover with genuinely sharp handling. It is one of the few crossovers that can honestly claim sports car DNA.
