Second Generation (A33)
A transponder key with an ID46 chip and a high security blade. Your I35 runs the NATS immobilizer system, which means the car checks the chip inside the key head every time you turn the ignition. Without the right chip signal, the engine will not start, even if the physical key turns perfectly. On-board programming is possible when you already have a working master key, which keeps the process fast and affordable.
What Key Does Your I35 Actually Use?
Your I35 has a metal transponder key for starting the car and a separate plastic remote fob for locking and unlocking. The key itself has no buttons and no battery. The remote fob is the small rectangular piece with four buttons.

Transponder Key Failure
'Engine cranks, will not start, security light on' is our common I35 ticket across the 619. The ID46 chip degraded or dropped sync with NATS. Marco hooks the Autel IM608 to OBD-II and re-registers in Carmel Valley or Otay Mesa.
Immobilizer Antenna Ring Failure
The NATS antenna ring around your ignition wears out after 20 years of heat cycles. The car cannot read the transponder even though the key is fine. We test the ring before recommending a new key; if bad, we replace and reprogram at your location.
Worn High Security Blade
We check the blade profile first on this one. Your I35 uses a laser-cut style high security blade, and after years of daily use, the cuts wear down enough that the key will not turn smoothly in the ignition, or it gets stuck. Some customers think the ignition cylinder is failing when the real culprit is just a worn key. We cut a fresh blade to factory spec using precision equipment and pair it with a new transponder chip.
Can You Program a I35 Key on Your Own?
You can program the remote fob yourself using the ignition key cycle method. Insert and remove the key at least 6 times within 10 seconds until the hazard lights flash, then turn to ACC and press a button on the remote within 5 seconds. This only programs the keyless entry remote, not the transponder chip inside the key. For transponder programming, you need professional equipment.
