Out in Winter Gardens, over off the main stretch in Lakeside, I got a call from a woman who had bought a 2002 Infiniti I35 used about two years prior. She came with one key. The dealer lot told her to grab a spare whenever she got around to it.
She never got around to it.
The key head had a hairline crack she had ignored for months. Then it got bumped in her bag, the seam split open the rest of the way, and moisture found its way to the circuit board inside. The remote stopped working first. Then one morning the engine cranked and died immediately. The transponder chip had given up.
When I got there she still had both pieces of the broken key head and the blade. That mattered. I was able to read the transponder data directly from the chip inside the cracked housing -- it was damaged enough to stop communicating with the car, but the data was still recoverable. That meant I could work from what was already registered to her vehicle instead of running a full all-keys-lost procedure.
I cut two new key blades to her vehicle, transferred the recovered data into two fresh key units, and ran the programming sequence to register both to her immobilizer. Tested ignition start with each one, tested the remote functions on each one. Both came back clean.
She went from a pile of broken plastic and a car she could not drive to two fully working keys in about 40 minutes. I showed her the original chip out of the cracked housing so she could see why bringing the pieces instead of throwing them away had saved her time. The dealer quote she had looked up the night before was a lot more than what she paid me.
