Infiniti Q45 Key History
Unified Fob Era
Infiniti unified the Q45's remote and transponder into a single remote-head key. The transponder chip moved from the key blade into the fob body, and a flip blade provided the physical key function.
Integrated Fob Design
Infiniti consolidated all key functions into a single sleek fob for the Q45 — remote lock/unlock, proximity start, trunk release, and remote start in one unit with no separate pieces.
Pre-Chip Era
The earliest Infiniti Q45 models used plain mechanical keys with no electronic component. Any locksmith or hardware store could duplicate these keys by sight. No immobilizer, no transponder, no programming required.
Rolling Code Era
The Q45 upgraded to rolling code transponders that change the authentication value with each use. This made replay attacks impossible and significantly improved security over fixed-code predecessors.
Which Key Does Your Q45 Have?
A small metal blade hidden inside the smart key fob. Press the release button on the fob to slide it out. Used to manually unlock the driver's door when the fob battery is dead. Cannot start the engine on push-button-start models.
A limited-function key for the Infiniti Q45 that starts the engine but cannot open the glove box or trunk. Some valet keys also restrict engine power. Not all Q45 model years included a valet key.

Q45 Cranks But Will Not Start
If the engine cranks but will not fire, the immobilizer may not be recognizing the transponder chip in your key. This can happen with aftermarket keys that were not properly programmed or with keys that have been damaged. A locksmith can diagnose whether the key is the issue.
Key Stuck in Q45 Ignition
A key stuck in the Infiniti Q45 ignition is usually caused by a worn key blade, a failing ignition cylinder, or a steering column lock. Do not force it. Call {PHONE} and we will extract the key and diagnose the issue on-site.
Q45 Doors Not Locking or Unlocking Remotely
If your Infiniti Q45 key fob buttons are unresponsive but the car starts normally, the RF transmitter portion of the fob may have failed while the transponder chip still works. Try replacing the battery. If buttons still do not work, the fob may need replacement.
Can You Program a Q45 Key Yourself?
Infiniti Q45: Due to enhanced security protocols, all key programming must go through OBD-II with PIN authentication. This applies to both key addition and all-keys-lost scenarios.
Infiniti Q45: Fob button programming can be done at home. Enter the vehicle, close all doors, insert key in ignition, cycle ON-OFF the specified number of times, then press LOCK on new fob. Transponder pairing still requires a locksmith.
Infiniti Q45: No on-board programming procedure exists. Infiniti locked this generation to dealer/locksmith tools only. Professional scan tool with up-to-date Infiniti coverage is required.
