1998 Infiniti Q45 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A restaurant owner near Richland in San Marcos had been nursing his 1998 Q45 ignition for a few weeks. He'd developed a whole routine: wiggle the key a certain way, wait, try again.
Some mornings it cooperated. Others it didn't. He figured it was a programming issue, maybe something with the transponder, and the dealer told him he'd need a new cylinder, a new key, and a full reprogramming job. He was a day away from booking it when his valet mentioned me.
I met him in the parking lot before his dinner service. Watched him demonstrate the wiggle. That told me most of what I needed to know before I even touched anything.
The cylinder was worn, not dead. The wafers had lost enough material that the key was binding on the turn instead of engaging cleanly. I decoded the lock, swapped the worn wafers, and cut a fresh key matched to the repaired cylinder. Then I registered the transponder chip so the immobilizer would recognize it and the engine would actually start. Took one visit. Done before his first table sat down.
I kept the old wafers out and showed him the wear pattern. He held them up and looked at them for a moment, then said he'd had the car for six years and never thought about what was inside the ignition. The dealer would have replaced the whole assembly. He didn't need any of that.
