EZ Car Keyz vs. the Infiniti dealer
We give you the full price upfront, before we drive out to you anywhere in San Diego County. No diagnostic fees added at the end, no surprise charges once the job is done.
Which key does your M45 use?
A traditional metal key with a transponder chip inside the plastic head. Insert it into the ignition to start the car. Every time you turn the key, the chip communicates with the factory immobilizer to authorize the start.
A proximity fob that works from your pocket. Approach the car, grab the handle, press the start button. A laser-cut emergency blade lives inside the fob and opens the door manually if the battery dies.
How Infiniti M45 key technology evolved over the years
Transponder key (2003-2004)
The early M45 used a conventional approach: a metal key with a transponder chip embedded in the plastic head. You insert and turn it in the ignition the same way you would any older vehicle, but the car will not start unless the factory immobilizer recognizes that chip. There is no push-button start and no proximity detection here, just a clean, mechanical key with an electronic layer underneath. It is a straightforward system, but lost-key situations still require professional programming equipment to sort out.
Smart key with push-button start (2006-2010)
Infiniti moved the second-generation M45 to a full proximity fob setup. The fob stays in your pocket, the door unlocks when you grab the handle, and the engine starts with a button press. Inside the fob is a laser-cut emergency blade for the door cylinder if the battery goes flat. That battery is a CR2032 coin cell and typically holds up two to three years before needing a swap. Programming this fob requires dealer-grade programming equipment; there is no owner shortcut that handles the full ignition authorization.

Common Infiniti M45 key problems we see in San Diego
Fob battery draining too fast
The 2006-2010 smart key maintains a low-level wireless conversation with the car even when you are not driving. That ongoing communication wears down the CR2032 coin cell faster than most owners expect. If your push-button start has become unreliable or the fob range has shrunk noticeably, replace the battery first. It is a cheap fix that solves the problem more often than not, and it rules out anything more serious before you spend further.
Transponder chip not being recognized
On the 2003-2004 M45, the factory immobilizer must read the transponder chip in your key before the engine will fire. Some of these early units resist standard port-based programming and need a deeper access method to complete the pairing. We carry the equipment for both approaches on every call. If one method stalls, we move to the other without scheduling a second visit, which matters when you are stranded somewhere off the I-5.
Smart key receiver not detecting the fob
When a 2006-2010 M45 stops recognizing any key at all, the instinct is to blame the fob. But the module inside the car that listens for the fob signal can fail on its own. When that module goes, the car behaves as though no authorized key exists. We check the fob signal first. If the fob tests healthy, the problem is the receiver module, which needs replacement and reprogramming rather than a new key.
Worn laser-cut emergency blade
Laser-cut blades have tighter geometry than a standard cut, and that geometry wears down with regular use. When the edges round off, the blade starts making inconsistent contact inside the door or ignition cylinder, which can feel like an electrical problem when it is actually mechanical. On 2006-2010 smart keys, we inspect the blade early in the diagnosis. A fresh blade cut to factory spec is often all the car needs, and it costs far less than a full fob replacement.
Can you program an M45 key yourself?
For the 2003-2004 M45, there is a limited owner procedure that covers the remote lock and unlock buttons, but that only handles keyless entry. The transponder chip that actually authorizes the engine start still requires professional programming equipment. Skipping that step means a key that opens the door but will not start the car.
The 2006-2010 M45 has no owner-accessible programming path at all. The factory immobilizer on these years requires dealer-grade programming equipment to pair any new fob or key to the vehicle. Call (619) 876-1271 and we handle the full job on-site, wherever your car is parked in San Diego County.

Did You Know?
The Infiniti M45 marked a real shift in how luxury sedans thought about key technology. The first generation kept things simple with a conventional transponder key, while the 2006-2010 model brought a full proximity fob and push-button start, putting it in direct competition with European and Japanese rivals who were all chasing the same goal at the time. It was a period when the key fob became part of the ownership experience, not just a way to open a door.
