2005 Infiniti M45
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to making a spare?

On the 2005 M45 with its mechanical key, all-keys-lost is simpler than on modern Infiniti models because there is no immobilizer enrollment or PIN extraction involved. The job is cutting a new key, either from the key code tied to your VIN or by decoding one of your locks directly. That said, making a spare while you still have a working key is always the smarter move. It is faster, and you are covered if the original ever goes missing.

Q: Are aftermarket keys for the 2005 Infiniti M45 any good?

For a mechanical key on this vehicle, the blank quality matters for one thing: how cleanly it cuts and how long it holds that cut under daily use. Cheap blanks can wear faster or cut imprecisely, which leads to a key that works fine the first week and then starts hanging in the ignition or feeling rough in the door lock. I use blanks verified to fit this vehicle's keyway correctly.

Q: Can a locksmith cut a key for my 2005 M45 without the original key present?

Yes. Two methods. If I have your VIN, I can look up the key code on file and cut directly from that. If the code is unavailable or I want to verify it, I can decode one of your door locks or the ignition cylinder to pull the cut directly. Either way, you do not need an existing key in hand. That is exactly what all-keys-lost calls are built around.

Q: My 2005 M45 ignition feels stiff and the key is getting hard to turn. Do I need a new key or is the cylinder going?

Could be either, and the way to tell is simple. If a new key cut to the correct code also feels stiff, the cylinder is worn or binding. If the new key turns cleanly, the old one is just worn down enough that it's no longer matching the tumblers correctly. Keys on older vehicles do wear. The cuts round off gradually and the ignition starts to feel like it's fighting you.

2005 Infiniti M45 Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked off Loma Alta Drive in Oceanside on a Tuesday evening. He had his 2005 M45 and zero keys. Not a fob issue, not a dead battery. The key was just gone, and he had no spare.

He was pretty calm about it, which is rare for an all-keys-lost call. He said he'd already called the dealer and they told him two to three days minimum to order a VIN-cut key and he'd need to tow the car in. He wanted to know if I could do something faster.

I asked him two things: do you have your VIN, and is someone with you or are you waiting alone. He pulled the VIN off his registration in the glove box, which he still had from when he'd cleaned out the car earlier that day. That was good luck.

With the VIN, I was able to pull the key code before I even left. I arrived, cut the replacement blade on site under the parking lot lights, and walked him through turning it over in the ignition to confirm it cycled correctly. He was driving home inside of twenty minutes from when I pulled up.

He mentioned the dealer quote almost as an afterthought. The difference between what he paid me and what the dealer wanted was significant. And he didn't wait three days or arrange a tow.

That's the call I actually enjoy. No drama in the system. Just a lost key, a VIN, and a good cut.

Infiniti M45 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace a lost key for a 2005 Infiniti M45?▼

Call a mobile locksmith first. The 2005 M45 uses a mechanical key, which means the job is cutting a replacement blade to your vehicle. That is it. No programming fees, no dealer diagnostic, no tow required. Dealers will often quote you a full service visit for this, add a key-code lookup fee, and sometimes require the car on their lot. With me, you give me the VIN or I decode your lock on site, I cut the key, done.
