I got the call late on a weeknight from a guy in Old Town National City. He'd had a client dinner, handed his jacket to the coat check at a restaurant, and came back to nothing. Jacket gone, and with it his keys, wallet, and phone. He borrowed the hostess's phone, called the police, then his wife, then me.
His 2006 Infiniti M45 was sitting in the valet lot with zero keys in existence. His wife had already called the dealer while he was dealing with the police report. The dealer told her they could order the parts but it would be three to five business days, plus the car would need a tow since there were no keys to drive it, plus a separate charge to wipe the stolen fob from the system so it could not be used to enter the vehicle. The combined estimate was well over what I charge for the whole job.
I drove out that night. All-keys-lost after a theft is not the same as adding a spare key when you already have one working. A theft situation means the immobilizer memory has to be fully wiped so the stolen fob becomes completely dead to the vehicle. Even if the thief walks up to that M45 tomorrow, their key will not start it and will not unlock it. That matters.
I connected my diagnostic equipment to the OBD port, cleared every stored key from the immobilizer memory, and programmed two fresh fobs from scratch. Then I decoded the door lock and cut the emergency blade that lives inside the fob, tested every button, walked both door handles, and confirmed the start function on both units before I packed up.
He drove home that night. Two working keys, stolen fob permanently locked out, no tow, no multi-day wait. The dealer comparison came up briefly when he called his wife to say he was on his way. I heard him tell her it was a fraction of what they quoted. I just closed my van and headed back down to National City.
