Early Production
Your 1993-1994 J30 keeps things simple. The ignition key is a standard mechanical blade with no transponder chip and no factory immobilizer, so there is nothing electronic to program on that side. A four-button remote handles keyless entry separately, covering lock, unlock, trunk, and panic. Because the ignition key is purely mechanical, cutting a replacement from the factory code is a quick, affordable job even if you have lost every copy.
Mid-Production Years
The 1995-1996 J30 carries the same mechanical key with no transponder or immobilizer, which is good news when you are staring at an empty keyring. The remote updated to a slightly different unit for this window, and the 1996 model gained OBD-II diagnostics under the hood, but the key replacement process stays just as straightforward. Remote programming follows a simple on-board procedure rather than requiring dealer-grade programming equipment.
Final Production Year
Infiniti closed out the J30 in 1997 without changing the key system at all. The 1997 car uses the same mechanical blade and compatible remote as earlier years, which means parts are still easy to source and the replacement process is no different than the models before it. If you are all-keys-lost on a 1997, the job is just as clean and fast as any other year in the run.

Common J30 Key Problems
Remote Battery Failure
San Diego's coastal air, especially in areas near the bay or Mission Beach, can corrode the battery contacts inside a J30 remote faster than you might expect. A brand-new CR2032 will not fix a remote whose contacts have gone green. Key Blade Wear

Can You Program a J30 Remote Yourself?
Yes, the keyless entry remote on the J30 follows an on-board programming procedure you can do without any special equipment. Insert and remove the key from the ignition six times within ten seconds, then manually lock and unlock the driver door, and press any button on the new remote within five seconds. The hazard lights will flash twice to confirm the remote is accepted. One thing to know: this procedure erases all previously paired remotes, so have every fob you want to keep using ready to go before you start.
