Got a call from out in De Luz, the rural stretch west of Fallbrook where the roads go narrow and cell signal gets spotty. A guy had a 1995 Infiniti J30 sitting in his driveway, the only key lost somewhere on the property. He'd already spent two days looking.

I drove out. The J30 is a full-size rear-wheel-drive sedan from the mid-nineties, and the key situation on these is about as simple as it gets for a car that looked this elegant. I decoded the ignition cylinder and cut a replacement key blade on site. Turned it over. Started on the first try.
He seemed surprised it went that fast. No tow, no waiting on parts, no telling him to come back in three days. Just a key cut to his car, made in his driveway, for a fraction of what a dealer trip plus tow would have run him even if the dealer had been willing to touch it.
De Luz is one of those spots where being mobile actually matters. There's no easy way to get a car without keys out of there without a flatbed. He didn't need one.
