Which Key Does Your G20 Take?
A metal key with a thick plastic head and a transponder chip inside. No buttons, no battery. It has to be cut to your ignition and programmed to the factory immobilizer before the car will start.
The key head has three buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk. Inside you will find a transponder chip and a CR2025 battery that keeps the remote functions working. Both the chip and the remote signal need to be set up correctly.
How the G20's Key Technology Evolved
Transponder Key (1995-1998)
Your 1995 to 1998 G20 uses a plain transponder key with no remote buttons. It looks like a basic metal key, but there is a transponder chip hidden in the plastic head that talks to the factory immobilizer every time you turn the ignition. Lose that chip signal and the engine will not fire, even if the key turns freely. There is no battery inside and nothing to press, just a key that has to be properly programmed to your specific car.
Remote Head Key (1999-2002)
Infiniti added remote keyless entry for the 1999 to 2002 G20 by putting three buttons directly on the key head: lock, unlock, and trunk. A CR2025 battery powers the remote side, and the transponder chip is still in there handling the immobilizer communication. One important detail: all keys have to be registered together at programming time, so if you have a spare sitting in a drawer, bring it when we show up.

Can You Program a G20 Key on Your Own?
You can pair the remote buttons yourself using the ignition key cycle method with the trunk open, and it does work for the remote side. But that procedure does nothing for the transponder chip inside the key head. Getting the chip recognized by the factory immobilizer requires professional programming equipment, and skipping that step means the car still will not start.
On the 1999 to 2002 G20, the on-board remote pairing method involves inserting and removing the key from the ignition six times within ten seconds until the hazard lights flash, then pressing a button on the new remote. The hazards flash again to confirm the remote is paired. That is all this method does. The transponder chip in that same key still needs to be programmed with professional equipment before the car will recognize it as valid.

G20 Key Problems We See in San Diego
Immobilizer Not Recognizing the Key
The engine cranks but will not start, or the security light on the dash begins blinking. That usually means the factory immobilizer is not reading the transponder chip in your key, and a corroded antenna ring around the ignition cylinder is often the reason. Before suggesting anything else, we test both the transponder signal and the antenna ring on-site so we know exactly what we are dealing with.
Worn Key Blade
A worn key blade is easy to underestimate. Aftermarket blades in particular tend to wear down faster than factory ones, and once the cuts are too shallow, your ignition cylinder cannot read the pattern correctly. That can leave you stranded in a Mission Valley parking garage or locked out on the side of the I-5. We cut fresh blades from the original factory code rather than copying your worn key, so the pattern is accurate from day one.
Remote Battery Drain on 1999-2002 Keys
The seals on the 1999 to 2002 remote head key are not particularly tight. Coastal San Diego humidity gets in over time, the CR2025 battery drains faster than normal, and the lock and unlock buttons start working only when they feel like it. We check the battery contacts and the seal condition before assuming anything else needs replacing. A fresh CR2025 and a clean of the contacts fixes it more often than you would expect, though sometimes the circuit board itself has corroded.

Did You Know?
The G20 was one of Nissan's earliest vehicles to get a factory immobilizer, adapted from the Nissan Primera that the G20 was based on for the North American market. That shared origin meant the G20 had a lot in common under the hood with mainstream Nissan models sold elsewhere, making it a bit of an outlier among Infiniti vehicles of the same era.
