1996 Infiniti G20
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will a replacement key last on a car this old?

A properly cut metal key on a 1996 G20 can outlast the car. There's nothing electronic to fail. The only real wear point is the ignition cylinder itself. After nearly three decades, the wafers inside can get worn or corroded, and a new key that's cut to spec can actually feel different than what you're used to if your old key had rounded edges from years of use.

Q: What if the new key doesn't work after I get it?

Call me and I'll come back. If a key I cut doesn't operate the lock or ignition under normal use, I fix it. On a mechanical key job the failure point is almost always the cut itself, either a depth is slightly off or the blank had a small variance. That's a quick recheck and recut.

Q: Can you make a key if I'm completely locked out and have no key at all?

Yes, and the 1996 G20 is a good candidate for this. I can decode the door lock cylinder to determine the cut values and produce a working key without any prior key present. No towing required, no dealer visit. I come to wherever the car is sitting, whether that's a parking lot, a storage facility, or your driveway in Bayside, and cut the key on site.

Q: My ignition is getting hard to turn. Is that a key problem or something else?

On a 30-year-old car, almost certainly the cylinder. The wafers inside wear down and can bind, especially if the key has been rattling around with extra weight on the ring for years. A worn key can also accelerate that wear. Sometimes a freshly cut key to the correct specs actually turns smoother than the old worn one did. If it's binding badly, the cylinder may need servicing or replacement.

1996 Infiniti G20 Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Moving day doesn't wait for anybody. A guy over in Bayside, Imperial Beach was dealing with a divorce and a storage pod pickup scheduled for noon.

His movers were already on the way when he realized the only key to his 1996 Infiniti G20 was somewhere inside the pod, buried under two years worth of boxes. Digging for it meant unloading everything before the pod company showed up. That wasn't happening.

He called me instead.

I pulled up to the facility within the hour. The G20 was sitting in the lot, locked, key somewhere in the stack. I decoded the door lock cylinder right there on site and cut a replacement blade to match on my machine. Tested it in the door, tested it in the ignition. Car turned over on the first try.

He was back to directing movers within about 40 minutes of my arrival. The dealer would have needed him to tow it in, wait on a parts order, and come back another day. That wasn't an option with a noon pickup on the clock.

Sometimes the simplest key job is the one that saves the whole day.

Infiniti G20 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys for a 1996 Infiniti G20?▼

For a vehicle this age with a mechanical key, the distinction matters less than it would on a newer car. There's no chip to match and no electronics to pair. What matters is that the key blank fits the correct keyway and that the blade gets cut accurately. We use professional-grade blanks that match the original profile. A sloppy cut or the wrong blank causes wear on the ignition wafers over time, so we don't cut corners on fit.
