Out in Berry Park in Imperial Beach, I got a call from a guy who had been driving his 2004 Infiniti I35 on one key for three years. He finally snapped it off in the door lock trying to get in after the fob clicker on his key wore out. His words: "I didn't even know there was a fob part, I just used it as a regular key."
That cracked-off blade told the whole story before I even pulled a tool out. The key had been worn down at the shoulder for a while, probably flexed every time he used the lock. The transponder chip inside was still intact, just locked inside the broken head sitting in the lock cylinder. I extracted the broken piece, decoded the cut from what was left, and cut a new key blade to match.
Then came the transponder side. With the I35, the immobilizer communicates with the chip in the key during startup. Wrong chip or an unprogrammed one and the engine cranks but does not run. I programmed the new key on site in his driveway while he watched from his front step. Turned the ignition, engine came up, no warning lights staying on, no stall.
He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him they would have needed to order the key blank, scheduled him at least a few days out, and the total bill would have been a good chunk more than what he paid me. He nodded like that tracked with what he had heard before.
He also asked, before I left, whether he should get a second key made while I was already there. He should. I told him so. Easier and less expensive than another all-keys-lost job down the road.
