My key shell is cracking around the head. Can you replace it without reprogramming?

On the 1999 I30, the transponder chip is molded into the plastic key head, not a removable board like you'd find in a newer fob. That changes the answer a little. If the shell is cracking but the chip is still intact and the key starts the car reliably, we can assess whether the chip can be carefully transferred or whether a full replacement and reprogramming is the cleaner move. Trying to crack open the old head and move the chip is delicate work on these early molded keys. Sometimes it goes clean, sometimes the chip housing doesn't survive. We'll tell you honestly on site what we're looking at before we commit to anything.

What exactly is a transponder key and why does the 1999 I30 need one?

The key has a small chip sealed inside the plastic head. When you turn the ignition, the vehicle's immobilizer antenna ring reads that chip. If it doesn't get the right signal back, the engine won't stay running - it may crank, but it cuts out immediately. No buttons, no remote, no battery in the key. Just the chip and the blade. Nissan introduced this system on the I30 as a theft deterrent, and it works. A key cut to the right profile but with no chip, or a chip that isn't registered to your car, won't start it. That's why a hardware store copy will get you into the ignition but won't drive the car anywhere.

The car cranks but stalls right away. Could that be the key?

On the 1999 I30, that symptom - cranks, fires briefly, then immediately dies - is a textbook immobilizer response. The engine management system is getting told by the immobilizer to shut down because the chip wasn't recognized. Try your other key if you have one. If a second key starts it fine, the first key's chip has likely failed or drifted out of registration. If neither key works, it could be a registration issue, a failed immobilizer antenna ring around the ignition cylinder, or a deeper module problem. We can read the system on site and tell you which one you're dealing with. Don't assume the worst until it's diagnosed.

Question 4

I found a replacement key blank online. Can I just have it cut and will it work?

Getting it cut is only half the job. The blade needs to match your ignition, yes, but the key also needs a transponder chip that is registered to your vehicle's immobilizer. A blank without a compatible chip, or one with a chip that hasn't been programmed, will crank the engine and kill it. On the 1999 I30, we can cut the blade to your vehicle and program the chip on site. If you already bought a blank, bring it with you - we'll verify whether the chip type is compatible before we do anything else.

Can I program a second key myself on the 1999 I30, or do I always need a locksmith?

If you still have a working key, there is an onboard registration procedure on this generation of NATS that can sometimes add a second key through an ignition-cycling sequence. It doesn't always work cleanly, and the procedure is specific - wrong timing voids it and you start over. If you've lost all keys, there is no DIY path. All-keys-lost on this system requires equipment to access the immobilizer and register from scratch. Either way, call us first. If the onboard method is viable for your situation, we'll walk you through whether it applies. If it doesn't, we come to you in Old Town National City and handle it on site.
