I was parked off Highland Avenue near Old Town National City when this call came in. Owner of a 1999 Infiniti I30, only key, wouldn't start. She had already tried jumping the battery thinking that was it.
When I got there, the engine was cranking fine. Turning over, no catch, dying immediately. That pattern on a late-90s Nissan/Infiniti points straight at the immobilizer not seeing the transponder chip. Classic early NATS behavior.

She looked at me like I'd done something strange, because nothing visibly changed. Same key, same car. But the immobilizer needed to see the chip registered again, and now it did.
She had called the dealer before she called me. They told her to have it towed in, and the estimate they gave her was a number she wasn't comfortable with. She saved a good chunk by the time we were done on the street, no tow, no waiting room.
