My key head is cracked and falling apart. Can you replace just the shell?

On a 2001 QX4 transponder key, the shell and the chip are separate things. The chip sits loose inside the key head, and as long as it transfers over intact, you do not need to reprogram anything. I cut a new blade, move the chip into a fresh key head, and you are done. The immobilizer never knows the difference because it is reading the same chip it already learned.

Worth noting: these older key heads are brittle at the bow where the keyring hole is. That crack usually starts small and people ignore it until the head separates entirely and the chip gets lost. If yours is cracking, get it handled before it fails somewhere inconvenient.

What exactly is a transponder key and why does the 2001 QX4 need one?

The key has a small passive chip embedded in the plastic head. When you insert the key and turn it, an antenna coil around the ignition cylinder sends out a radio signal that powers the chip momentarily. The chip transmits back a code. The immobilizer control unit checks that code, and if it matches what is registered, it allows the engine to start.

The 2001 QX4 has no remote buttons on the transponder key. It is a turn-key ignition only. Lock and unlock are handled separately by any factory remote you may have for the vehicle. The transponder key itself is purely about starting the car. A blank key cut to the right profile will turn the ignition just fine but the engine will crank without firing, or start and stall immediately, because the immobilizer never got the signal it was waiting for.

My QX4 cranks but will not start, or starts and immediately stalls. Is this the key?

That pattern, cranks and dies right away, is the classic sign the immobilizer did not recognize the key. On a 2001 QX4 it usually means one of three things: the chip inside the key head is damaged or missing, the key was never properly programmed to this vehicle, or the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder has a fault.

Try the spare key first if you have one. If the spare starts and holds, the problem is isolated to the first key. If both keys do the same thing, look at the antenna ring or the immobilizer control unit itself. I bought a replacement key blank online. Can I bring it to you to cut and program?

Sometimes, but be careful. The 2001 QX4 requires a key blank that carries a compatible transponder chip. A lot of blanks sold online are cut-only, meaning they have the right blade profile but no chip inside, or they carry an incompatible chip type. If the chip is wrong, programming will fail and you will have a key that turns the lock but will never start the car.

If you already bought one, bring it along. I can check whether the chip is present and compatible before we go further. If it is not right, I carry blanks that work for this vehicle.

Can I program a second key myself at home on a 2001 QX4?

No onboard DIY sequence exists for this vehicle. The early Nissan immobilizer system on the 2001 QX4 requires a programmer to register keys. There is no ignition-turn pattern or button sequence that works here. If you need a spare, the key needs to be cut to your vehicle and the chip needs to be enrolled by someone with the right equipment.
