I got a call from a parking lot off Bernardo Center Drive, just at the edge of the Seven Oaks neighborhood in Rancho Bernardo. A guy had pulled in to grab dinner and when he came back out, no key. Not in his pocket, not on the ground near the car, not anywhere. Just gone. His 2004 350Z sitting there under the lights going nowhere.

He told me he'd searched the lot twice and checked the car through the window. He was calm about it, which I respect, but he also had no idea where to start. No spare. He'd owned the car for two years and never thought about it.

I asked him to find the VIN through the windshield at the base of the glass, driver's side. He spotted it in about thirty seconds. That gave me everything I needed to prep the correct key blank and fob before I even left my van.

When I got there, I verified ownership, decoded the lock, cut the key blade to the vehicle, and assembled the replacement fob. The 350Z of this era has an onboard relearn procedure, but with zero working keys that route was closed. I used the diagnostic port to register the new key's transponder to the immobilizer directly. Started on the first try.

He stood there and just turned the key a couple of times like he was checking that it was real. I get it. It had been a stressful hour.

He drove home. If he'd called the dealer first, they would have told him to tow it in, wait until the following morning, and budget a good chunk more than he paid me. I was done and gone before the lot cleared out.
