2006 Nissan 350z Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out near the Lake Poway Area, a guy called me about a 2006 350z with a broken key. Not a lost key situation. The blade had snapped clean in the ignition cylinder, and a piece of it was still in there.
He had already called someone else. That locksmith told him the cylinder would need to be drilled out and replaced, new keys cut, whole assembly swapped. The quote was steep, and something about it did not sit right with him, so he called me for a second opinion.
I drove out and had a look. The fragment was in there, but the wafer surfaces were untouched. Using a Lishi-style pick tool, I worked the broken piece out without touching the cylinder walls. Once it was out, I decoded the lock by reading the wafer positions directly, which gave me the exact cut depths for a new key.
From there I cut a new blade to match the decode, transferred the working chip from the old broken head, and verified the car started. The remote got a fresh CR1616 while I was at it.
His lock works exactly as it did before. No new cylinder, no tow to the dealer, no waiting for parts to be ordered. The other locksmith's plan would have cost him significantly more, and he would have ended up with a new cylinder that his glove box key no longer matched.
That last part is the one people forget. When you replace the cylinder, you introduce a second key situation. His original lock is still his original lock.
