What a Maxima Key Replacement Costs in San Diego
Every quote includes the key blank, cutting, programming to your Maxima, and a full function test before we pack up. The number you hear on the phone is the number on the invoice.
Which Key Does Your Maxima Take?
No chip, no remote, no programming. We cut it on the spot and you are on your way. Straightforward job, straightforward price.
A chip inside the key must be programmed to your car's computer or the engine will not start. The 3-button remote handles lock, unlock, and trunk. One price covers both steps.
Remote and transponder built into one unit with a laser-cut blade. Thicker and more precise than older Maxima keys, and not something a hardware store can duplicate.
Same design as the earlier remote head key. Laser-cut blade, 3-button remote, and a transponder chip, all in one unit that we cut and program together.
A proximity fob that stays in your pocket while you push to start. Keyless entry built in, plus a hidden emergency blade for when the battery dies.
How Maxima Keys Evolved Over the Generations
Mechanical Key (1995-1999)
The 1995 to 1999 Maxima kept things simple. There is no transponder chip inside the key, no factory immobilizer, and no electronics to worry about. We cut a replacement on our mobile unit and hand it back in minutes. No programming step, no waiting, and the price reflects that simplicity.
Transponder Key (2000-2003)
Starting in 2000 Nissan added a transponder chip inside the key and tied it to the car's computer through the factory immobilizer. The 3-button remote runs on a CR2032 battery. A perfectly cut blade will not start the engine unless the chip is programmed to match your specific car. We handle the cut and the programming together, and you get one flat price covering both.
Remote Head Key (2004-2008)
Nissan combined the remote buttons and transponder chip into a single remote head key for the 2004 to 2008 Maxima. The blade is laser-cut, which means a hardware store copy is not going to work. It still uses a CR2032 battery for the remote. Our quote covers the blank, the laser cut, and the programming in one number before we arrive.
Remote Head Key (2009-2014)
The 2009 to 2014 Maxima carried forward the same remote head key setup, laser-cut blade, 3-button remote, transponder chip, and CR2032 battery. On-board programming is still possible on these years, which keeps our process straightforward and lets us work right in your driveway without dealer tools or dealer prices.
Smart Key (2016-2023)
The 2016 to 2023 Maxima moved to a proximity smart key with push-button start and keyless entry. A laser-cut emergency blade is tucked inside the fob for when the battery goes flat. Programming these requires server authentication through Nissan's system, and we carry the dealer-grade programming equipment and credentials to complete that on-site. The price is still quoted upfront before we drive out.

Common Maxima Key Problems We See in San Diego
Factory Immobilizer Receiver Wear (2000-2014)
There is a copper receiver coil around the ignition barrel that reads the transponder chip in your key. Over time that coil degrades and the car starts acting like you are using a foreign key, security light on, engine not starting. Before we replace anything we test the coil and the key separately so you know exactly which part is the problem. No guesswork, no unnecessary parts charged to you.
Remote Head Key Blade Separation (2004-2023)
The laser-cut blade connects to the fob body through a small pivot hinge. Years of daily use loosen that hinge until the blade starts to wobble, and eventually it separates completely, sometimes inside the ignition. If yours is already wiggling, call us before it snaps off. We carry replacement keys on every truck and can reach you anywhere along the I-5 or the 805 corridor in San Diego County.
CR2032 Battery Draining Too Fast (2000-2023)
If you are swapping a CR2032 every couple of months, the battery is not the root cause. Rapid drain usually means the receiver module in the car is pulling a constant signal from the fob rather than polling intermittently. Buying batteries at the store every few weeks adds up fast. We diagnose the actual cause on-site so you stop treating the symptom and fix the real problem.
Smart Key Programming Failures (2016-2023)
Most smart key failures on the 2016 to 2023 Maxima are not a broken fob, they are a failed programming sync. If a previous key was not properly removed from the system before a new one was added, the car can reject the replacement outright. We carry Nissan-authenticated dealer-grade programming equipment on every call and handle the server handshake on-site, anywhere in San Diego County.
Can You Program a Maxima Key Yourself?
If your Maxima is a 1995 to 1999 model, there is nothing to program. It uses a plain mechanical key with no chip. Get it cut and you are done.
On 2000 to 2006 models you can program the remote's lock and unlock functions yourself using an ignition cycle method: insert and remove the key several times within a short window, then press a button on the new remote. That only handles the remote buttons. It does not touch the transponder chip, so the car still will not start without professional programming for that part.
For 2007 and newer Maximas there is no DIY path. The factory immobilizer requires dealer-grade programming equipment for both the transponder and remote functions. We bring the right tools to you anywhere in San Diego County and get it handled on-site for less than the dealer charges.

Did You Know?
The 1995 to 1999 Maxima was among the last Nissan models sold in the United States with a completely mechanical key, no transponder chip, no factory immobilizer, nothing electronic in the key at all. When Nissan rolled out the factory immobilizer system starting with the 2000 model year, the Maxima was one of the first vehicles to receive it. That makes the late 1990s Maxima the final chapter of the pure metal key era for this model line.
