How Maxima Keys Changed Over the Years
Fourth Generation (A32)
This where security got serious. Just kidding. It didn't. Your A32 Maxima uses a plain mechanical key with no transponder chip, no immobilizer, and no electronics at all. We cut a new one on the spot in about five minutes. No programming needed.
Fifth Generation (A33)
This where security got serious. Nissan introduced the NATS immobilizer system on the A33, which means your key has a transponder chip inside it that talks to your car's computer. It uses a standard blade with a CR2032 battery for the 3-button remote. Without the right chip programmed to your ECU, the engine refuses to fire, even with a perfectly cut key.
Sixth Generation (A34)
This where the key got smarter. Nissan moved to a remote head key design, combining the remote buttons and transponder chip into one unit with a laser-cut blade. Still runs on NATS and a CR2032 battery. The laser-cut blade is harder to duplicate at a hardware store, which is the whole point.
Seventh Generation (A35)
This where things stayed consistent. Your A35 Maxima keeps the remote head key with a laser-cut blade, 3 buttons, and NATS immobilizer. CR2032 battery powers the remote. On-board programming still works here, which means we handle everything in the driveway with no dealer involvement.
Eighth Generation (A36)
This where security got its biggest upgrade. Nissan switched to a smart key with push-button start and keyless entry. Your A36 uses an advanced NATS variant with a laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside the fob. Programming requires server authentication through Nissan's system, but we carry the tools and credentials to handle it on-site.
Identify the Key on Your Maxima
Simple metal key with no chip and no remote. We cut it on the spot. No programming, no fuss.
Your key has a chip inside that must match your car's NATS computer. The 3-button remote locks, unlocks, and triggers the trunk.
The remote and transponder are built into one key. The laser-cut blade is thicker and more precise than older Maxima keys.
Same concept as the A34 generation. Laser-cut blade, 3-button remote, and NATS transponder all in one unit.
This the proximity fob that stays in your pocket. Push-button start, keyless entry, and a hidden emergency blade for when the battery dies.

Maxima Key Issues We Knock Out in San Diego
Receiver Coil Wear in the Ignition Barrel (2000-2014)
Copper receiver coil around the ignition barrel wears on 2000-2014 Maximas. It reads the transponder, and once it degrades the Maxima decides you're using the wrong key even though it is yesterday's Otay Mesa key. Marco tests coil and chip separately curbside.
Remote Head Key Blade Separation (2004-2023)
We check the hinge first on every wobbly remote head key. The laser-cut blade connects through a small pivot, and years of use loosens it until the blade separates. Wiggling? Dial (619) 876-1271 before it snaps in the ignition.
CR2032 Battery Drain (2000-2023)
Maxima remote eating CR2032s every few months, replaced twice already. Not normal. Rapid drain points to a faulty receiver module pulling constant signal from the fob, not a bad battery. We diagnose so you stop buying batteries at the Chula Vista Walmart.
Smart Key Programming Issues (2016-2023)
People think the A36 smart key broke when the real problem is a failed programming sync. Nissan's server auth is finicky; if a previous key wasn't deregistered, it rejects the new one. We carry Nissan-authenticated tools to Carlsbad or Encinitas.
Can You Program the Maxima Key Yourself in San Diego?
No programming needed. Your A32 Maxima uses a plain mechanical key with no chip. Get it cut and you're done.
You can knock out the remote lock and unlock buttons yourself running an ignition cycle method. Insert and remove the key six times within ten seconds, then press a button on the new remote. This only programs the remote functions. It does not program the transponder chip, so you still need us for the part that actually starts the car.
No DIY option here. The advanced NATS immobilizer on 2007 and newer Maximas requires professional diagnostic equipment for both transponder and remote programming. Dial (619) 876-1271 and we handle it on-site.

San Diego Trivia Worth Knowing
Quiet bit of Maxima trivia most San Diego owners do not know: the A32 generation (1995-1999) was one of the last Nissans in the US to ship with a completely mechanical key, zero chip, zero immobilizer, nothing electronic in the head. When NATS rolled out on the 2000 model, the Maxima sat right at the front of that transition. So an A32 parked in Hillcrest today is one of the final pure-mechanical-key Nissans Marco still cuts.
