I was out near the Torrey Pines stretch of Del Mar on a Tuesday when a guy called me from the parking area off Torrey Pines Road. He had his 2002 Nissan Maxima and one key that was giving him grief. The key would go in, the car would crank, catch for a half second, then die. He had already checked the fuel gauge. Twice.

Then I used my programmer at the OBD port to read the immobilizer data and register the key correctly to the vehicle. No towing, no pulling the dash apart, no new ignition cylinder.

It started clean on the first try after that. He sat there for a second like he expected it to stall again.

The dealer would have wanted him to tow it in. That alone would have eaten a chunk of change before anyone even looked at it. He paid a fraction of what that whole ordeal would have cost and drove out of the lot inside an hour.
