The smog check shop on Beyer Blvd called me, not the customer. That's how this one started.
A Maxima owner had brought his car in for a smog check, mentioned in passing that he needed a key made, and a locksmith he found online showed up. Somewhere in the middle of the programming sequence the car battery sagged. Power dropped at the wrong moment, mid-security-handshake, and the immobilizer went into a fault state. The other tech packed up his gear and left without a word. The smog shop owner was standing there holding the phone wondering what to do with this car that now wouldn't communicate cleanly with anything.
That's when they called me.
I came out to the Beyer Blvd Corridor location with my jump pack and my full diagnostic setup, including a backup module reader I bring on jobs where I know there might be layered problems. First thing I did was stabilize the battery with the jump pack before touching the OBD port. A lot of recovery attempts on botched programming jobs fail because the tech goes right back in without addressing the voltage drop that caused the problem in the first place.
Once I had stable power, I cleared the fault state through the OBD port and verified the immobilizer was communicating correctly before starting any programming. Clean state, fresh start. The new fob paired on the first attempt. Total time was close to an hour and a half, longer than a normal replacement job, because of the recovery work upfront.
The customer saved a real chunk compared to the flatbed-to-dealer route that was the other option on the table. The smog shop now has my number saved.
