1997 Nissan Maxima
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What kind of key does the 1997 Nissan Maxima actually use?

A standard metal key cut to the vehicle. No fob, no remote buttons, no battery. You put it in the ignition cylinder and turn it, same as cars have worked for decades. The key has to be cut to the correct profile for this generation Maxima, and the cuts have to be accurate. That's the whole job: right blank, right cut, fits the lock and ignition. Nothing more complicated than that.

Q: How long does it take to get a replacement key made for a 1997 Maxima?

Fast. On a mechanical key job like this, once I'm at your location in Rancho Bernardo it usually takes under 30 minutes start to finish. That includes decoding or reading the original if it's worn, cutting the blade, and testing it in the ignition, driver door, and any other lock on the car you want verified. There's no programming countdown, no relearn sequence, no waiting on a module.

Q: My 1997 Maxima key turns in the ignition but the car won't start. Is the key the problem?

On a 1997 Maxima with a mechanical key, if the key turns normally and the engine won't start, the key itself is almost never the cause. A mechanical key either fits the cylinder and turns or it doesn't. If it's turning, it's doing its job. From there you're looking at the ignition switch, the starter circuit, the neutral safety switch if it's an automatic, or fuel and spark issues. That's a different diagnosis than a key problem.

Q: Can I use a worn copy to get another copy made, or do I need the original?

A copy of a copy is almost always a mistake. Each generation of copying drifts further from the original depths. You end up with a key that almost works, or one that works today and starts binding six months from now. The right move is decoding the lock directly or tracing back to the original key code for the vehicle. That gives you a key cut to spec, not a key cut to another worn key.

1997 Nissan Maxima Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in the Seven Oaks area of Rancho Bernardo, a guy had just picked up a 1997 Nissan Maxima from a private seller. Good shape, clean interior, one key. The seller mentioned something about a spare being around but it never showed up at the handoff.

He tried the hardware store first. They looked at the blade, said they could copy it, and handed him something that went in the lock but wouldn't turn. He came back and they tried again. Same result. He called me after that.

I met him in his driveway. The original key was worn enough that the hardware store copy was chasing the wrong depths. I decoded the lock directly instead of trusting the worn original, pulled the correct key code for the cylinder, and cut a new blade to spec on the van.

It turned smooth on the first try. He tested it on the ignition, the driver door, and the trunk. All three. That's the part people forget until they're standing in a parking lot with a key that starts the car but won't open the door.

He asked what the dealer would have charged. Honestly, for a mechanical key on a car this age, a dealer probably would have sent him to a locksmith anyway.

Nissan Maxima Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Nissan dealer to get a replacement key for a 1997 Maxima?▼

Not at all. The 1997 Maxima uses a metal key, and a qualified locksmith can cut one on site without a dealer visit. A dealer would likely refer you out or treat it as a basic locksmith call anyway. There is no module programming session, no appointment needed, and no tow required unless the vehicle is already undrivable. We come to you in the Seven Oaks area and handle it in one stop.
