My fob has a fresh battery but the Maxima still shows a key-not-detected warning. What's going on?

A few things can cause this even with a good battery.

First, check how the battery is seated. If the fob was pried open instead of opened cleanly from the blade end, the battery contact inside can get slightly bent, enough to cause an intermittent connection without looking obviously wrong.

If the battery seating is fine, the next thing to look at is the Intelligent Key antenna system in the car itself. This generation has antenna receivers at the door handles and in the cabin near the ignition area. A bad connection or a failing receiver can make the car act like the fob isn't there even when it's working perfectly.

There are also cases where the fob itself has developed an internal fault, separate from the battery. If a second known-good fob works fine but yours doesn't, that points to the fob. If neither key gets detected, the car's antenna or the Intelligent Key module is where you start looking.
