It was a Wednesday in tax season. A tax accountant called from her firm's lot in San Ysidro Village, San Ysidro. She had clients booked back to back through the evening, a 2017 Nissan Maxima sitting dead in the parking lot, and zero time to deal with a tow.
The push-to-start button was not responding. The fob felt dead in her hand. She said she had already tried holding it closer to the button and pressing harder, like pressure would fix it.

Opened the fob first. The CR2032 was not new, and the contact inside had a slight backward bow to it from what looked like a past battery swap done with something too wide. Straightened the contact, cleaned it, put in a fresh CR2032, seated it correctly.
Tested the start. Nothing. That told me the fob itself had lost its pairing, probably a deeper voltage dropout that knocked it out of registration.
Plugged into the OBD port, ran the Intelligent Key registration sequence, paired the fob back to the car. All five buttons verified working. Emergency insert key tested in the door cylinder.
She was back at her desk before the 1pm client arrived. The car never moved from its spot. Compared to scheduling days out, arranging a tow, and paying dealer rates on top of that, the math was not close.
