2007 Dodge Dakota
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and what's inside it?

It's the key your 2007 Dakota came with from the factory. The head of the key, the chunky plastic part you hold, does two things at once. First, it houses the transponder chip that talks to the immobilizer when you turn the ignition. The truck reads that chip and decides whether to let the engine run. Second, that same housing contains the remote fob electronics with your four buttons for locking, unlocking, and the other functions. One key, two systems.

Q: How does your price compare to the dealer for a 2007 Dakota key?

The dealer route on a truck like this usually means dropping it off, waiting on parts to be ordered, and coming back another day. Owners on forums have reported being quoted well over double what a mobile locksmith charges, and that's before towing if you have no working key to drive it in. I come to wherever the truck is sitting, including a boat ramp in Alpine, and the job gets done on the spot.

Q: Can I program a spare Dakota key myself if I still have one working key?

Sometimes, yes. The 2007 Dakota has an onboard relearn procedure that can work for adding a key when you already have at least one programmed key in hand. The sequence involves cycling the ignition in a specific pattern with the existing key, then inserting the new transponder key within a short window.

Q: My 2007 Dakota starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Start with the CR2032. That battery powers the remote side of your key, and when it drops low, range goes first, then the buttons stop responding entirely while the truck still starts normally because the transponder runs off a different power source. Swap the battery, make sure it seats flat with good contact, and retest. If it's still dead after a fresh CR2032, the fob may need to be re-paired to the vehicle, which is a quick job.

2007 Dodge Dakota Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

It was early morning when I got the call. A guy over in Alpine Village had driven out to the lake boat ramp before sunrise and somewhere between the dock and the dirt parking lot, his only key vanished.

Checked the tackle box, checked the boat, checked every pocket twice. The 2007 Dodge Dakota was just sitting there and he was already doing the math on a tow and a Monday dealer appointment.

I told him I could be there that afternoon.

When I pulled up, he was sitting on the tailgate of a stranger's truck trying to get some shade. The lot was empty except for his Dakota and a couple of boat trailers. I picked the door, decoded the lock to get exact cut depths, and went to work on the transponder side through the OBD port. All-keys-lost on these trucks means clearing the previous key memory and registering fresh, so that's what I ran.

The moment he turned the key and it held, he just sat there for a second. Engine running, in a dirt lot, two hours after he thought his whole day was done.

I cut him a spare before I packed up. He didn't have to think twice about it.

Dodge Dakota Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Why does Dodge key replacement cost so much?▼

A few things stack up on you. The remote head key in your 2007 Dakota isn't just a metal blank with buttons. There's a transponder chip inside the head that has to be registered to your specific truck before the engine will run. That programming step requires equipment and time, and dealers bill accordingly.
