1998 Dodge Dakota
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know I am getting a real price and not a bait-and-switch quote?

Bait-and-switch is common in this industry. The pattern is always the same: a low number over the phone, then a new number once the locksmith is on-site and the customer feels stuck. On a 1998 Dodge Dakota, a scam version of this sometimes involves quoting a simple key cut price and then claiming programming fees are required for work that does not actually involve any programming.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like my original?

Yes. On a 1998 Dodge Dakota, the key operates the ignition cylinder and the door locks. A replacement cut to the correct profile will do both. I test the key in the ignition and in each door lock before I leave, so you know it works in every lock on the truck, not just the one I happened to grab first.

Q: I lost all my keys and do not have the key code. Can you still make a replacement?

Yes, that is a routine situation. If you do not have the code, I decode the cut directly from the lock cylinder on the truck. The door lock or ignition cylinder holds the cut profile in the wafer stack, and a trained locksmith can read that and translate it into a working key. You do not need to produce paperwork, a door sticker, or anything else. The truck itself gives up the information.

Q: My key turns hard or feels sticky in the ignition. Should I just get a new key cut?

Not necessarily. On trucks this age, a worn ignition cylinder is often the real problem. A new key cut to the same profile will still turn hard if the cylinder wafers are worn or corroded. Worth having the cylinder inspected before cutting a new key. Sometimes a worn key has been working a worn cylinder long enough that they shaped themselves to each other, and a fresh correctly-cut key actually fits tighter at first.

1998 Dodge Dakota Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a pest control company owner out in Rancho Bernardo, over near the Santaluz side of town. He ran a small fleet of work trucks, and a couple of his guys had been sharing keys between shifts. Keys walk. One morning nobody could find the spare for one of his 1998 Dodge Dakotas and the route sat parked.

He called a dealer first. They told him to bring the truck in. He asked about doing more than one key while he was at it, got a per-key price that made him pause, and then realized he would need to pull trucks off routes to do it. The math did not add up.

He found me and I drove out to his yard one morning before his crews rolled out. I decoded the key from the lock cylinder on the first truck so he did not need to dig up any paperwork, cut a fresh key right there on the hood, and tested it in the ignition and both doors. Took maybe fifteen minutes per truck once I got into a rhythm.

All three done before his first route left the yard. He kept spares tagged to each truck from that day on, and the morning key shuffle stopped being a problem.

No programming, no tow, no half-day at the dealer. Just a locksmith who showed up, decoded the cut, and made keys that worked.

Dodge Dakota Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on vehicles in California?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz holds a California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services license (BSIS LCO #6792) and carries full insurance. For a 1998 Dodge Dakota specifically, the job is a mechanical key cut, so there is no secure gateway access or factory security data involved. But the licensing matters regardless of the job.
