A guy in Dictionary Hill, Spring Valley called me about his 2009 Dakota. He said the truck was completely dead, no response from the key at all, and he had already been quoted a tow plus a dealer appointment two weeks out.
When I got there, the situation was more specific than he had described. The remote functions on the key head were completely unresponsive, which is what had him rattled. But when I asked him to try starting the truck, it started. The blade was going in the ignition the way it always had. The truck was fine.
He had one original key left and needed a spare cut and programmed as a backup. We did it in his driveway. The new key got enrolled to the immobilizer, the blade was cut to match his lock cylinder, and I had him test both keys start-to-finish before I packed up.
The dealer had told him a replacement key was a two-week parts order minimum. He was not expecting me to have the right key in the van, ready to go. That part surprised him more than the price did, and the price already surprised him since it was a fraction of what they wanted.
He has two working keys now. Took about forty minutes in his own driveway on Dictionary Hill.
