Ducati Red Keys, Black Keys, Keyless Fobs & Code Cards
Code cards, red masters, and keyless fobs - the Ducati key ecosystem.
Mechanical Keys: The Early Standard
Ducati motorcycles use three generations of key technology. Pre-2007 models use standard mechanical keys with no electronics, making them straightforward to duplicate. From 2007 to 2014, Ducati introduced transponder chip keys using Philips PCF7935 or PCF7946 chips (64-bit ID) that communicate with the ECU through an immobilizer system. These keys require both precision cutting and electronic programming.
Encrypted Smart Keys: 2015 to Present
From 2015 to present, Ducati uses encrypted RFID smart keys with PCF7961 or NXP Hitag2 chips, CAN bus integration, and rolling-code authentication. Premium models feature keyless proximity fobs for push-to-start operation. Ducati keys are model-year-specific, meaning a 2012 Monster 796 key will not work on a 2016 Monster 821 even if the blade fits. We program these on-site with the correct chips for your exact model and year. No dealer visit required.
Ducati Immobilizer - Magneti Marelli, CAN Bus & Red Key Programming
Magneti Marelli immobilizer tech and what it means for key replacement.
How the Immobilizer Works
Ducati uses several immobilizer configurations depending on the model era. The IRC (Immobilizer, 3 Keys, Code Card) system includes an antenna around the ignition that reads the transponder code, verifies it through the instrument panel, and confirms with the engine ECU before enabling the start. IRC-equipped bikes come with 1 red master key, 2 black user keys, and a code card with a 5-digit PIN for emergency override.
I2K, ZADI, and Red Key Programming
The I2K (Immobilizer, 2 Keys) system is similar but uses 2 keys total and is common on newer models like Scramblers. Some Panigale models use a ZADI immobilizer integrated with the ECU. All systems feature a PIN code backup that can be entered by twisting the throttle and counting EOBD light flashes. The red key is critical for programming because it confirms registration (3 flashes after self-test) and is required to add new black keys or replace components. Our NASTF-certified technicians understand these systems and handle Ducati immobilizer programming at your location.

What the Dealership Charges
Ducati dealerships charge approximately $85 for an OEM key plus $70 for programming, totaling about $155 for a basic spare. However, all-keys-lost situations or proximity fob replacements can cost significantly more. The dealership process requires bringing your bike in and may take a full visit or more.

EZ Car Keyz comes to you. We carry Ducati-compatible transponder blanks (including T5 cloning chips compatible with 2004 to 2014 models), precision cutting equipment, and programming tools. We clone existing keys or program new ones to your ECU on the spot, saving you the hassle of towing or arranging a dealer appointment. Skip the dealer and call us for an exact quote at 50-70% less than dealer rates.

Ducati Models with Unique Key Characteristics
Key Models to Know
The Monster 696, 796, and 1100 allow key programming without dealer tools using the 5-digit code from the code card and the dashboard. This is one of the more owner-friendly programming processes in the Ducati lineup. The Panigale models use a ZADI immobilizer integrated with the ECU that requires diagnostic tools for reprogramming.
Scrambler and Multistrada Considerations
The Scrambler uses the I2K system (2 keys total), and losing all keys may require a full lockset and dashboard replacement if no PIN or red key is available. The Multistrada 1260 stores the PIN in the hands-free unit rather than the dashboard. Call us for same-day mobile locksmith service on any Ducati model.
Ducati Key Technology Timeline
Early History
Before 2007, Ducati motorcycles used basic mechanical keys with no electronics. From 2007 to 2014, transponder chip keys with Philips chips became standard across the lineup, paired with the IRC or I2K immobilizer systems.
Encrypted Smart Keys and Keyless Fobs
From 2015 to present, Ducati transitioned to encrypted RFID smart keys with rolling codes and CAN bus integration on premium models. The keyless proximity fob system appeared on models like the Diavel 1260 and newer Multistradas. Ducati's immobilizer systems were broadly implemented from model year 2006 onward. Whatever era your Ducati is from, our mobile locksmith team handles it on-site.
