BMW EWS Laser-Cut Keys, Keyless Ride Fobs & Legacy Blanks
Laser-cut transponders to proximity fobs - the BMW key lineup.
Mechanical Keys: The Early Standard
BMW motorcycles use proprietary laser-cut keys with precise side cuts that prevent standard duplication. Pre-2000 models use basic mechanical keys without electronics. From the early 2000s onward, BMW introduced transponder chip keys with the EWS (Elektronische Wegfahrsperre) immobilizer system, requiring both precision laser cutting and electronic programming.
Keyless Ride Proximity Fobs: 2010 Onward
Current models from 2010 onward feature the Keyless Ride system with proximity fobs that contain a CR2032 battery and allow push-button start without removing the key from your pocket. The R1300GS fob is larger than the R1250GS version with improved battery management. BMW also includes an emergency plastic key for manual ignition and lock operation if the fob battery dies. Key codes on BMW motorcycles follow ranges like 11111 to 55555 and are only found on the original key tag or in the owner's manual. We handle laser cutting and Keyless Ride programming on-site. No dealer visit required.
BMW EWS & Keyless Ride - Dual Security Systems Explained
Two security systems, one bike - how BMW layers protection.
How the Immobilizer Works
BMW motorcycles use the EWS (Elektronische Wegfahrsperre) electronic immobilizer system, adapted from their automobile line. The system works through a transponder chip in the key that emits a unique code (rolling codes on newer versions), which is read by an antenna ring around the ignition cylinder and verified by the EWS module. If the code matches the stored data, a release signal is sent to the ECU to enable fuel and spark. Mismatched or unrecognized keys block the engine completely. The EWS module is typically located under the tank or dashboard.
Keyless Ride and Emergency Antenna Locations
Modern BMW bikes use the CAS (Car Access System) variant or Keyless Ride, which adds proximity detection so the fob does not need to be inserted. The R1200RT and R1250RT have a ring antenna under the windscreen adjuster cover where the fob must be placed for pairing. For emergency situations, BMW includes an antenna location under the rear fender where you can hold the fob for a backup start. Our NASTF-certified technicians handle all BMW security systems at your location.

What the Dealership Charges
BMW motorcycle dealerships charge $500 to $1,200 for a full key replacement, including the new key or fob ($300 to $600), programming ($150 to $400), and diagnostics. The process typically takes 1 to 3 business days if parts are in stock, or up to a week if a fob needs to be ordered. Towing is usually required because programming needs a direct ECU connection with proprietary BMW tools.
What EZ Car Keyz Offers Instead

BMW Models with Unique Key Characteristics
Key Models to Know
The R1250GS supports adding new keys via OBD when a working key is present, making spare key creation straightforward. However, an all-keys-lost scenario requires accessing the EWS module with specialized cables.
R18 and RT Series Pairing Quirks
The R18 is known for replacement fobs failing to pair with the alarm system out of the box, requiring a specific pairing procedure where the fob must be held under the rear fender. The R1200RT and R1250RT Keyless Ride models require removing the windscreen and adjuster cover to access the ring antenna for fob pairing. We handle all of this on-site. Call for an exact quote.
BMW Motorcycle Key Technology Timeline
Early History
Before 2004, BMW motorcycles used basic mechanical keys without electronic security. From 2004 to 2007, the R1200 series introduced transponder chip keys with the EWS immobilizer, requiring ECU programming.
Keyless Ride Becomes Standard
By the 2010s, the Keyless Ride proximity system became available on GS, RT, and touring models. From 2018 onward, virtually all BMW motorcycles feature keyless smart keys with hands-free ignition and induction coils for emergency start. No current BMW motorcycle uses a simple mechanical key without an immobilizer. Whatever BMW you ride, our mobile locksmith team comes to you for same-day service.
