KTM Transponder Keys, Race On Fobs & Off-Road Mechanical Keys
Street transponders, off-road mechanicals, and keyless fobs.
Mechanical Keys: The Early Standard
KTM uses three distinct generations of key technology. Pre-2012 models like the early Duke 620, Adventure 950, and RC8 use simple mechanical keys that are straightforward to duplicate with standard key cutting tools. From 2012 to 2017, KTM introduced laser-cut transponder keys with glass-encapsulated RFID chips (typically Texas Instruments T5577 or Hitag2). These keys require both precision cutting and chip cloning or ECU programming.
Race On Keyless System: 2018 to Present
From 2018 to present, KTM uses the Race On keyless system with rolling-code encryption and proximity detection via paired fobs. Race On supports keyless ignition, fuel cap, steering lock, and even luggage on touring models. We handle all three generations of KTM key systems on-site. No dealer visit required.
KTM Race On Keyless System - Pairing, Encryption & Override
How Race On keyless technology secures your KTM.
How the Immobilizer Works
KTM Race On is the brand's modern keyless ignition and security platform, found on current premium models like the 1290 Super Adventure and Duke 890. The system uses a transponder fob that provides keyless start, fuel cap operation, steering lock, and luggage lock functionality for KTM touring luggage.
ARA Security and the Orange Master Key
Race On includes ARA (Anti Relay Attack) mode for enhanced security. When ARA is active, you must press the transponder button before turning on the ignition. The system then provides a 10-minute window before entering suspend mode, which disables all keyless functions. If you stop during a ride and turn off the ignition, suspend mode activates after 5 minutes, requiring another button press. Physical keys can still open luggage if power to the lock actuator fails. We handle Race On fob pairing, orange key programming, and ARA troubleshooting at your location. Older KTM models with immobilizers use an orange master key (similar to Yamaha's red key) that is essential for programming new black slave keys to the ECU. Our licensed and NASTF-certified technicians handle Race On fob pairing and orange key programming at your location.
KTM Dealer Pricing vs. Mobile Locksmith - Real Numbers
Half the cost. Same day. At your bike.
What the Dealership Charges
KTM riders report significant frustration with the key replacement process. Dealers often provide only uncut blanks rather than finished keys, forcing owners to find someone to cut them separately. Many local locksmiths refuse to cut KTM blanks due to the specialized profiles. On top of that, KTM dealers may quote high prices for the OEM ignition key (around $181) before programming fees.
What EZ Car Keyz Offers Instead
EZ Car Keyz eliminates this runaround entirely. We come to your KTM with the correct blanks, cut them on-site using precision equipment, and handle all transponder programming or Race On fob pairing in one visit. No tow needed, and typically 50-70% less than dealer rates. Call for an exact quote.

KTM Key Technology Timeline
Early History
Before 2008, KTM motorcycles used basic mechanical keys. From 2008 to 2013, transponder chip keys with the orange master key system became standard, using RFID chips that communicate with the ECU immobilizer. The orange key system persisted through at least 2016 on models like the Super Duke 1290 R.
Race On Keyless and Off-Road Exceptions
From 2018 onward, KTM introduced the Race On keyless system with rolling-code encryption and proximity fobs on premium street and adventure models. Off-road competition models like the SX and XC series may still use simpler key systems due to their lightweight, minimalist designs. Whatever KTM you ride, we come to your bike for same-day service.
What KTM Riders Say About Key Replacement
What Riders Report
KTM owners report high frustration with the key replacement process. A common complaint is that dealers only provide uncut blanks and expect the owner to arrange separate cutting. Multiple riders report calling a dozen or more locksmiths who all refuse to cut KTM blanks.
Advice from the KTM Community
Used bike buyers frequently discover they only received one key and no key card. The KTM community recommends getting spare keys made immediately after purchase and keeping the orange master key in a secure location separate from the bike. Call EZ Car Keyz for a same-day spare at a fraction of dealer cost.
