Harley Key Systems: Round Keys, Transponder Chips & Smart Fobs
From round keys to proximity fobs - know what your Harley uses.
Mechanical Keys: The Early Standard
Harley-Davidson has used several different key systems over the years, and knowing which one your bike uses matters when you need a replacement. Pre-2007 models like older Sportsters, Dynas, and Softails use standard mechanical keys with no electronic chip. These are straightforward to cut and duplicate using Harley-specific blanks like the HYD-12, HYD-13, and HYD-15 through HYD-18 series.
Transponder and Proximity Fob Keys: 2007 Onward
Starting around 2007, Harley introduced transponder chip keys that communicate with the ECM (Engine Control Module) for immobilizer security. These require both precision cutting and electronic programming to match your bike. We program these on-site, so no dealer visit required. From 2014 onward, most models switched to proximity key fobs with push-to-start functionality and rolling encrypted codes. Current models including the Street Glide, Road Glide, and Softail lineup all use the proximity fob system with CR2032 batteries and a 5-digit security PIN as a backup. If your fob battery dies, you can still start your bike using the PIN entered through the handlebar switches. Whatever key system your Harley uses, our licensed and NASTF-certified technicians handle it at your location with same-day service.
H-D Smart Security System & ECM Immobilizer Explained
How the H-D Smart Security System protects your ride.
How the Immobilizer Works
Harley-Davidson uses what they call the Factory Security System or Smart Security System on most modern models. Unlike some other manufacturers, Harley does not brand their immobilizer as a standalone system. Instead, it is an integrated package that combines the immobilizer with an optional alarm, motion detection, and a pager transmitter with up to 400 yards of range. The system works by disabling the starter and ignition circuits when armed. Only the programmed key fob can disarm it. If your fob is lost or the battery dies, a 5-digit Security PIN can be entered using the turn signal switches and odometer display to bypass the system.
Which Harley Models Have the Smart Security System
The Smart Security System became a factory option around 2007 on Twin Cam models and is now standard on most Milwaukee-Eight equipped bikes from 2017 onward. For locksmiths, the security module is located under the seat, and fob programming is tied to the ECM, which means the bike must be present for any key work. We come to your bike with the diagnostic tools to handle Smart Security System programming on-site. No tow needed.
Harley Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz - Price, Speed & Convenience
Same result. Half the price. Zero towing.
What the Dealership Charges
Harley dealerships typically charge $200 to $500 or more for a full key replacement, including the new fob ($95 to $350), programming fees ($100 to $300), and diagnostic charges. The process often requires towing your bike to the dealer since they need a direct connection to the ECM. Wait times can stretch from one to three days if parts need to be ordered.

We stock Harley-specific key blanks and have the diagnostic tools to program transponder keys and fobs on the spot. Most jobs are completed in under an hour. Harley riders on forums overwhelmingly recommend mobile locksmiths over dealerships for speed, cost savings, and convenience. Skip the dealer and call us for an exact quote, typically 50-70% less than dealer rates.

Harley-Davidson Key Technology Timeline
Early History
Before 2007, all Harleys used basic mechanical keys with no electronics. Around 2007, Harley introduced the Turn Signal Security Module (TSSM) with transponder chip keys on higher-end models. By 2011 to 2014, the Body Control Module (BCM) system expanded to Dyna, Softail, and Touring lines, making fobs mandatory with 24-digit programming codes.
What This Means for Key Replacement
From 2014 onward, virtually every Harley uses a proximity fob with no mechanical key for primary ignition. If your Harley was built before 2007, key replacement is straightforward mechanical cutting. If it was built after 2014, expect fob programming as part of the job. Either way, our mobile locksmith team handles it on-site. Call for an exact quote.
