Indian Motorcycle Key & Fob Replacement - No Tow Needed
Key & Fob Programming - At Your Indian, No Tow Required
Indian Motorcycle combines American heritage with modern technology, and their key systems reflect both sides. Older Scouts and FTR models use traditional keyed ignitions, while modern Chiefs, Chieftains, Challengers, and Roadmasters feature keyless proximity fob systems with VCM (Vehicle Control Module) authentication. EZ Car Keyz provides mobile key replacement for all Indian Motorcycle models, handling both mechanical key cutting and keyless fob service.
Indian Motorcycle Mechanical Keys, VCM Fobs & Keyless Systems
Scout keys, Chief fobs, and the VCM system - all covered.
Mechanical Keys: The Early Standard
Indian Motorcycle uses two primary ignition systems across their lineup. Keyed ignition models like the Scout, Scout Sixty, Scout Bobber, and FTR 1200 use traditional mechanical keys with stamped key numbers on the bow. The first digit of the key code determines the keyway.
Keyless Proximity Fobs on Touring Models
Keyless ignition models, which include most 2014 and newer Chiefs, Chieftains, Challengers, Springfields, and Roadmasters, use proximity key fobs that communicate with the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) via RFID. These fobs come in two types: basic buttonless fobs and multi-function fobs with lock/unlock buttons. Both types use CR2032 batteries and operate within about 3 feet of the bike. A backup 4-digit PIN can be entered using the turn signal switches or the RIDE COMMAND display (on 2019 and newer models) to start the bike without the fob. For keyed models, we cut and duplicate keys on-site. No dealer visit required.

How the Immobilizer Works
Indian Motorcycle's keyless system integrates the immobilizer directly with the Vehicle Control Module (VCM). The key fob serves as a two-way RFID transmitter that authenticates with the VCM before the ignition is enabled. Without the fob in range, the bike remains completely immobilized. Multi-function fobs also arm and disarm the alarm system and operate electronically locking saddlebags and trunks on touring models.
Which Indian Models Have Keyless Ignition
The system verifies fob proximity again when you shift from neutral into gear. A rider-set PIN provides backup access if the fob is unavailable. The keyless ignition system was introduced in 2014 on the Chief and Chieftain, with an integrated alarm and immobilizer added to all full-size models in 2016. RIDE COMMAND screen PIN entry was added in 2019. Our mobile locksmith team can assist with fob troubleshooting and keyed model service at your location.
Indian Dealer Appointment vs. Same-Day Mobile Key Service
No transport, no wait list, no dealer surcharge.
What the Dealership Charges
Indian Motorcycle dealerships are often the only option riders consider because the keyless fob system requires proprietary programming. Replacement fobs cost approximately $375 and may not include the blank key (a separate part). Owners report that dealers sometimes cannot even obtain certain parts despite them appearing in the parts catalog. The process requires towing the bike to the dealer since mobile service is not offered.
What EZ Car Keyz Offers Instead
EZ Car Keyz offers an alternative for keyed ignition models (Scout, FTR) with on-site key cutting and duplication. For keyless models, we can assist with fob battery replacement, PIN recovery guidance, and basic fob troubleshooting to help you avoid unnecessary dealer visits. Call for an exact quote.

Indian Models: Keyed vs. Keyless
Key Models to Know
The Scout, Scout Sixty, Scout Bobber (2017 to 2024), and FTR 1200 use traditional keyed ignitions with 3 or 4 position switches (OFF, RUN, PARK, and Steering Lock on the FTR). Key replacement on these models is straightforward mechanical work.
Keyless Models and the 2025 Scout Hybrid
The Chief, Chieftain, Challenger, Springfield, and Roadmaster (2014 and newer) use the keyless VCM system with proximity fobs and PIN backup. The 2025 Scout introduced a hybrid option with a keyed ignition plus a power switch fob. For riders considering a used Indian, knowing whether the model is keyed or keyless before purchase helps avoid surprise key replacement costs. Call us for a quick quote on any Indian model.
