Does Insurance Cover Car Key Replacement? What to Check

Where key coverage tends to hide, what to ask your agent, and the paperwork that makes a claim or reimbursement go smoothly.

BSIS LCO#6792NASTF VSP certifiedMobile, we come to you
Quick answer

Sometimes. Some comprehensive auto policies cover stolen keys, and some roadside plans, extended warranties and card benefits include lockout help or key replacement, usually up to a limit. Coverage varies widely, so check your policy or call your agent. If you do file, an itemized invoice from a licensed locksmith is usually part of what you submit.

Key takeaways
  • Key coverage, when it exists, usually sits in comprehensive coverage, a roadside plan, an extended warranty or a card benefit, not in the liability part of a policy.
  • Many policies treat a stolen key differently from a lost one, so describe exactly what happened when you ask.
  • Compare your deductible to the flat-rate quote before filing; if the two are close, a claim may not be worth it.
  • Some plans only pay providers they dispatch, so call the plan first if you intend to use it.
  • We provide an itemized invoice, and a reimbursement request usually asks for one.

Does car insurance pay for a lost or stolen key?

It depends on your policy and on what happened to the key. Some comprehensive policies cover a stolen key, a key you simply lost is covered less often, and key benefits sometimes sit in a roadside plan or warranty rather than in the auto policy itself.

Car keys got expensive when they stopped being plain metal. Most modern keys carry a transponder chip or a smart-key transmitter that has to be programmed to your car, so replacing one costs real money. That is why it is worth a few minutes with your paperwork before you pay out of pocket.

We are locksmiths, not insurance agents, so we cannot tell you what your policy covers. Only your policy wording or your agent can answer that. What we can tell you is where coverage tends to live, what to ask, and what a claim usually needs from us.

Where key coverage usually lives

Look in five places: the comprehensive part of your auto policy, any optional key add-on, a roadside assistance plan, an extended warranty or service contract, and the benefits that come with some credit cards. Each works differently.

Places to check, and the question to ask about each
Where to lookWhat it sometimes coversWhat to check
Comprehensive coverageStolen keys on some policies, lost keys less oftenThe wording on theft versus loss, and your deductible
Optional key add-onSome insurers sell key replacement as an extraWhether you bought it, and its limit
Roadside assistance planLockouts, and on some plans a new keyThe per-call limit, and whether you can choose your locksmith
Extended warranty or service contractSome include key or fob replacementWhether it covers lost keys or only a fob that failed
Credit card benefitsSome cards include roadside helpWhether the benefit pays, or only arranges the service

None of these are guaranteed, and the same company can sell very different plans. Read the actual wording, or put one plain question to your agent or plan administrator: does my plan cover a replacement car key, and under what circumstances?

Lost and stolen are not the same claim

Many policies treat theft as a covered event and treat losing something as your own responsibility. If your keys were stolen, say so and file a police report, since some insurers ask for one with a theft claim. If you simply lost them, ask anyway, but expect coverage to be less likely.

Is it worth filing a claim for a car key?

Only if the covered amount clearly beats your deductible. Compare the flat-rate quote for your key with the deductible on the coverage that applies; if they are close, paying directly is often simpler.

A comprehensive claim typically comes with a deductible, and it can be high enough to swallow the cost of a single key. A roadside plan or warranty benefit may have no deductible but a cap per call. Get our quote first, since it is a fixed number, then do the math against your own policy.

Some drivers also wonder whether a small claim affects future premiums. That is a fair question for your agent; it varies by insurer, and we cannot answer it for you.

What an itemized invoice does for your claim

It shows who did the work, what was done and what it cost. That is what a reimbursement request usually needs, and we provide an itemized invoice with the work broken out line by line.

A useful invoice for an insurance, roadside or warranty claim shows:

  • The locksmith's business name, so the insurer can see a real business did the work.
  • What was done, for example a key cut, a transponder programmed, or a lost key removed from the car's memory.
  • What was supplied, such as the key or fob itself.
  • The date and the total.

A handwritten total on the back of a business card does not do this, and neither does a cash receipt with no business name on it. Some insurers also want the vehicle identified. The year, make, model and VIN are on your registration, so send a copy of it along with the invoice. If your insurer wants to confirm a licensed locksmith did the job, our BSIS license number, LCO#6792, is public and easy to verify.

Roadside plans, extended warranties and card benefits

These are worth checking even if your auto policy says nothing about keys. Each plan sets its own rules on who does the work and how you get paid back.

Roadside assistance

Many roadside plans cover lockouts up to a set limit, and fewer cover making a new key. Some only pay for a provider they send; others reimburse you for a licensed locksmith you choose, as long as you keep the invoice. If you want to use the plan, call it before you call anyone else and ask which kind it is.

Extended warranties and service contracts

Some include key or fob replacement, sometimes only for a fob that stopped working on its own rather than one that was lost or dropped in the pool. The contract wording decides it, so read the section on keys or ask the administrator before the work is done.

Credit card benefits

Some cards include roadside benefits. Terms vary widely, and some benefits arrange the service at your cost rather than pay for it. The benefit guide that came with the card spells out which kind you have.

If your keys were stolen, deal with security first

A stolen key is a security problem before it is an insurance question. On many cars, programming new keys also lets us remove the stolen key from the car's memory, so it no longer starts the engine.

Report the theft to the police, then call us. If anything with your address was taken along with the key, treat it as urgent and do not wait on the insurer before securing the car.

Frequently asked questions

Does comprehensive insurance cover lost car keys?
Sometimes, and more often for stolen keys than for lost ones. Some comprehensive policies cover key theft, and some insurers sell key replacement as an optional add-on. A key you simply misplaced is less likely to be covered. Check the wording of your own policy or call your agent, and compare the deductible with the flat-rate quote before you file.
Will my roadside assistance pay for a locksmith?
Many roadside plans cover lockouts up to a limit, and some cover key replacement. Whether you can use your own locksmith depends on the plan: some only pay providers they dispatch, while others reimburse you when you send an itemized invoice. Ask before the work is done, not after, so a technicality does not cost you the claim.
Does an extended warranty cover a key fob?
Some do, often only for a fob that failed on its own rather than one that was lost or damaged. It depends entirely on the contract. If yours covers it, ask whether you can use a licensed locksmith and send in the invoice, or whether the work has to go through a specific provider.
What should a locksmith invoice include for an insurance claim?
Usually the business name, a description of the work, the parts supplied, the date and the total. We provide an itemized invoice with the work broken out line by line. If your insurer also wants the vehicle's year, make, model or VIN, those are on your registration, so send a copy with the invoice.
Do I have to go to the dealer for insurance to pay for a key?
It depends on the plan. Some reimburse the cost of the work wherever it is done, and others have rules about who does it, so ask your insurer or plan administrator first. If you can choose, a licensed mobile locksmith comes to the car, which saves a tow, and on average we save customers 40 to 60 percent compared to dealership pricing.
Should I wait for insurance approval before getting a new key?
If your plan requires approval first or uses its own providers, yes, call before any work starts. If it reimburses after the fact, you can usually get the key made and submit the invoice afterward. Either way, a short call to the plan first protects the claim, and a stolen key is worth securing quickly.
