Key fob replacement cost depends on what is actually wrong. A weak battery or cracked case is a small repair. Programming a fob you already own usually costs less than buying a new one, and a new proximity fob for a push-to-start car costs the most. Aftermarket fobs save money only when they match your car.
- Rule out the battery first: a fresh coin cell fixes most fobs that are fading rather than dead.
- A cracked case or worn buttons can usually be repaired without buying a new fob.
- Programming a fob you already own usually costs less than a new fob supplied, cut and programmed.
- An aftermarket fob can work when its FCC ID, frequency and chip match the vehicle, and we check it before any charge.
- Bring every fob you want to keep, because many cars only remember the fobs present during programming.

Do you need a new key fob, or just a new battery?
Often just a battery. If the range has been shrinking for weeks, or the dash shows a low key battery warning, a fresh coin cell usually solves it, so check the inexpensive fixes before paying for a new fob.
| What you notice | Likely cause | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Range shrinking over weeks | Weak coin cell | Battery swap |
| Buttons only work when pressed hard | Worn button pads or contacts | Case and button repair |
| Cracked shell or broken key ring loop | Damaged housing | Electronics moved to a new case |
| Dead right after a battery change | Battery seated wrong, or lost sync | Check the battery, then resync |
| Fob got wet | Water on the circuit board | Dry it out, new battery, test |
| Lost, or the board is dead | No working fob | New fob, cut and programmed |
Fob batteries are coin cells, most commonly a CR2032, CR2025, CR1632 or CR1620, and they typically last 2 to 4 years. A fob that got wet can usually be saved if you dry it out promptly and replace the battery.
| Option | Ventura County | San Diego County | Time on-site |
|---|---|---|---|
| CR2032 / CR2025 Battery Swap | $25-$45 | $30-$50 | 5-10 min |
| CR1632 / CR1620 Battery Swap | $25-$45 | $30-$50 | 5-10 min |
| Fob Case & Button Repair | $35-$75 | $40-$85 | 10-20 min |
| Battery + Reprogramming Combo | $65-$125 | $75-$150 | 10-25 min |
| Fob Signal Diagnostics | $45-$150 | $50-$175 | 15-30 min |

What does it cost to program a fob you already have?
Programming alone usually costs less than a new fob from us, because you have already paid for the hardware. That covers a fob from a dealer parts counter, one bought online, an extra fob for a second driver, or a fob that lost sync.
| Option | Ventura County | San Diego County | Time on-site |
|---|---|---|---|
| OEM Fob Programming | $125-$200 | $150-$225 | 15-30 min |
| Aftermarket Fob Programming | $100-$175 | $125-$200 | 15-30 min |
| Dealer-Purchased Fob Activation | $125-$175 | $150-$200 | 15-25 min |
| Multi-Fob Programming | $200-$350 | $225-$375 | 30-45 min |
| Remote Start Fob Sync | $150-$250 | $175-$275 | 20-40 min |
| Fob Resync After Battery Swap | $75-$125 | $85-$150 | 10-20 min |

Bring every fob you want to keep working. Many cars clear their stored fobs during a programming session and only recognize the ones present, so a fob left in a drawer can stop working afterward. Several fobs in one visit fall under a single multi-fob rate, which usually works out cheaper per fob.
Remote start can be its own step. On some cars the lock and unlock buttons work as soon as the fob is programmed, but the remote start function needs a separate sync. If remote start matters to you, mention it when you call so it is part of the quote.
We program at the car with an Autel IM508 or AutoProPad, and most jobs finish in a single visit. See key fob programming for how a visit works.
How much is a brand new fob, cut and programmed?
When the fob is lost or its circuit board is dead, you need a new one supplied, cut if it has a blade, and programmed. Push-to-start proximity fobs cost the most, flip keys cost less, and an emergency blade on its own is a small job.
| Option | Ventura County | San Diego County | Time on-site |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smart Key / Proximity Fob Replacement | $250-$450 | $275-$475 | Under 1 hour |
| Flip Key / Switchblade Key Replacement | $150-$275 | $160-$300 | Under 45 minutes |
| Emergency / Insert Key Replacement | $75-$150 | $85-$165 | Quick service |

The quote covers the fob, the cutting, the programming and the trip, and the price we quote on the phone is the price you pay. Most smart fobs also hide a small metal emergency blade for the door. If the fob still works but the blade is gone, you only need the blade.

Why one fob costs more than another
Inside each range, the price moves with the fob and the car it pairs to. A proximity fob instead of a button remote, extra buttons or a remote start function tend to add cost. So does a vehicle that needs a security code or more programming time, which is why newer models and luxury makes usually land toward the top.
Lost your only push-to-start fob? That is an all-keys-lost job with its own steps, covered in lost push-to-start key fob and on our push-to-start smart key page.
Should you buy an OEM or aftermarket key fob?
An OEM fob is built for your vehicle and is the lower-risk choice. An aftermarket fob costs less up front and works well when it matches the car, but quality varies, so confirm compatibility before you buy.
| Factor | OEM fob | Aftermarket fob |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware cost | Higher | Lower |
| Fit and finish | Matches the original | Varies by seller |
| Compatibility | Built for the vehicle | Must match FCC ID, frequency and chip |
| Chance it will not pair | Low | Real, depending on the fob |
We program customer-supplied fobs when the FCC ID and frequency match the vehicle. Tell us what you bought when you call. We check it before we start, and if it will not work, we tell you before any charge.
Is a locksmith or the dealer cheaper for a key fob?
For most vehicles a mobile locksmith costs less. On average we save customers 40 to 60 percent compared to dealership pricing, and we come to the car instead of you booking a service appointment.
Dealers often price the fob and the programming as separate line items. If you already bought a fob at a dealer parts counter, we can activate it at your car for a flat rate. We work on most makes from 1995 through 2027, from a Honda in Ventura County to a Toyota in San Diego.
The exception at EZ Car Keyz is Mercedes-Benz. We refer new Mercedes keys, fob programming and all-keys-lost situations to the dealer. We still handle Mercedes lockouts and broken key extraction.
How do you keep a key fob working longer?
The usual causes of fob trouble are an old battery, water and a cracked case, and each one is easy to get ahead of.
- Replace the battery every few years. Coin cells typically last 2 to 4 years, and they usually fade before they quit. Shrinking range is the early warning.
- Open the case carefully. Prying with a knife or screwdriver can crack the seam or snap the clips. Use a plastic pry tool at the seam, or have us do it.
- Dry it fast if it gets wet. Take the battery out, let the fob dry fully, then fit a new cell. See key fob got wet.
- Know your backup start. Most push-to-start cars have one, usually holding the fob against the start button or a marked spot. Our guide to starting a car with a dead fob explains it, and we can walk you through it by phone.
- Keep a working spare. A second fob turns a lost fob into an inconvenience instead of an all-keys-lost job.
