Try your spare first: if it works, the problem is the fob. Then replace the battery, the most likely cause and the cheapest fix. If a fresh cell does nothing, check the contacts, look for water damage, and find out whether the fob lost sync. Try another spot to rule out interference. A cracked case or dead board means repair or replacement.
- Try the cheapest fix first: a fresh battery of the size printed on the old cell, commonly a CR2032, CR2025, CR1632 or CR1620.
- If your spare fob works, the problem is the fob; if no fob works and the dash is dim, look at the car battery.
- A fob that quits right after a battery change often has the cell in upside down, a bent contact or lost sync, and all three are fixable.
- A fob that got wet is usually salvageable if it is dried out promptly and the battery is replaced.
- Repairing a case or resyncing a fob usually costs less than a new fob, so get it diagnosed before you buy one.
Is it the fob or the car? Find out first
Try your spare fob and look at the dashboard: if the spare works, the problem is your main fob; if nothing works and the dash is dim or dark, the car's battery is the likely cause.
- Spare works, main fob does not: the main fob is the problem. Keep going down this page.
- Neither fob works, dash lights normal: both fob batteries may be fading if they are the same age, or the car is not hearing any fob because of interference or a problem on the car's side.
- Neither fob works, dash dim or dark: the car battery is weak or dead, and no fob will fix that.
- Buttons work but the car will not start: the remote side is fine, and the starting side of the fob or the car needs a look.
Also notice exactly what fails. Range that keeps getting shorter points to a weak battery. No response from any distance points to a dead battery, a bad contact or a lost pairing. One dead button while the others work points to a worn button or a cracked case.
Step 1: Replace the fob battery
A weak battery is the most likely cause and the cheapest fix. Fob batteries last roughly 2 to 4 years, and they usually fade gradually before they quit.
Most fobs use a coin cell, commonly a CR2032, CR2025, CR1632 or CR1620. The size is printed on the old battery, so open the case and read it before you buy. Many cars also show a low fob battery message on the dash before the fob dies.
Most cases open along a seam with a small notch, often hidden behind the emergency blade if the fob has one. Note which way the old battery faces, put the new one in the same way, and press the case closed until it clicks all the way around. Our dead fob battery guide has the full walkthrough and how to start the car in the meantime.

Step 2: Check the battery contacts and the case
If a new battery did nothing, look at what touches it. A battery in upside down, a flattened contact or a case that does not close fully acts exactly like a dead fob.
- Orientation: compare against how the old cell sat. Upside down, the fob is dead.
- Contacts: the small metal tabs should spring against the battery. If one looks flat, bent or green, that is a repair, not a battery job.
- Corrosion: white or green crust on the contacts or the board usually means moisture got in at some point.
- Case fit: a cracked or spread case can keep the battery from making steady contact, so the fob works only when you squeeze it.
- Buttons: worn rubber pads or a button that no longer clicks can fail even with a perfect battery.
A fob that works only when squeezed, or only on some presses, usually has a contact or case problem. In many cases the electronics are fine, and the fix is moving the circuit board into a new shell and repairing worn buttons. Step 3: Rule out water damage
A fob that got wet is usually salvageable if it is dried out promptly and the battery is replaced. The damage comes from moisture sitting on the board and corroding it, so speed matters more than anything else.
- 1Take the battery out
Open the case and remove the cell right away. A wet board with power on it tends to corrode faster.
- 2Dry it open
Leave the case open in a dry, warm spot, not a hot one. Skip the oven, the microwave and a hair dryer on high, because heat can warp the case and damage the board.
- 3Look for residue
Salt water and pool water leave deposits. White or green crust on the board means it needs cleaning before it will be reliable.
- 4Fresh battery, then test
Once the fob is completely dry, put in a new battery rather than the one that got wet, and test every button.
Our wet fob guide goes deeper on ocean, pool and washing machine cases, and on how to tell when a fob is beyond saving.
Step 4: Find out whether the fob lost sync with the car
A fob that is physically fine but gets no response, especially right after a battery change, may have lost its sync with the car. That calls for a resync, not a new fob.
Many remotes use rolling codes: each press sends a new code, and the car expects the next one in the sequence. On some vehicles, a battery change or a lot of presses out of range can push the fob and the car out of step. Some cars recover after a few presses close to the car or with a short procedure in the owner's manual. Others need a programmer.
A lost sync is not a broken fob. The car needs to relearn the fob, which usually costs less than a new one. We do it at the car with a professional programmer.

Step 5: Rule out signal interference
If the fob works in one place and not another, the problem may be the location, not the fob. Strong radio noise near some buildings, towers and other transmitters can drown out a fob's weak signal.
The test is simple. Stand right next to the driver door and try again, then try the fob somewhere else entirely. If it works normally away from that spot, the fob is fine. Carry the fob on its own for the test, not pressed against a phone, another fob or a metal case, since those can get in the way of a weak signal.
Interference comes and goes with the location. If the fob fails everywhere, interference is not the answer, and you are back to the battery, the contacts, the pairing or the electronics.
When to stop troubleshooting and call a locksmith
Call when a fresh, correctly installed battery does not fix it, when the case is cracked or a button is dead, or when the car will not start with the fob. Those are diagnostic and repair jobs, and we do them at the car.
- New battery in, still nothing, and the spare works: the fob needs diagnosis, repair or a resync.
- The fob works only when squeezed, or a button is dead: case and button repair.
- Buttons work but the car shows a key not detected message or will not start: the starting side of the fob needs attention.
- The board is cracked or corroded, or the fob went through the wash and stayed dead after drying: replacement.
