How Nissan Keys Have Changed Over the Years

Pre-1997

Standard Mechanical Key

1997 to 2006

NATS Transponder Chip Key

Nissan introduced its NATS immobilizer starting with the 1998 Altima, Maxima, and Pathfinder. Keys look like a standard blade but have an ID46 chip in the plastic head that must be programmed to the car's ECU. A blade cut to the right profile but unprogrammed will not start the engine.

2003 to 2017

Intelligent Key with Push-Button Start

Nissan's proximity smart key debuted on the 2003 Murano and 350Z and spread to mainstream sedans like the Altima by 2007. No blade insertion needed for entry or start. Programming requires OBD-II tools and often a NATS PIN code for all-keys-lost situations.

2018 to Present

Advanced PEPS and App-Integrated Key

Dead or Weak Fob Battery

The most common Nissan key issue by far. Nissan fobs draw a small constant current from the keyless chip, which means batteries typically last two to three years rather than the four or five you might expect. When the battery gets low you will notice reduced range and intermittent detection before it stops working entirely. Most Nissan fobs take a CR2025 battery and the swap takes about two minutes.

Intelligent Key Not Detected After Battery Swap

Swapping the fob battery sometimes causes a Nissan to lose sync with the Intelligent Key system, triggering a 'No Key Detected' warning even though the battery is fresh. This is a resync issue, not a programming failure. In many cases a simple ignition cycle sequence restores communication. If the resync does not take, the fob needs a full reprogram, which we handle on site.

Switchblade Key Stuck Open or Shell Cracked

Nissan issued a recall affecting roughly 700,000 SUVs including the Rogue for a switchblade key that could rotate in the ignition. The dealer fix involved permanently gluing the blade open, which made the fob bulky and made battery replacement nearly impossible without prying the case apart. If your switchblade is stuck or the shell is cracked from battery access attempts, we cut and program a clean replacement key on site.

Unprogrammed Online Fob Does Nothing

Nissan Rogue Key Replacement

The Rogue is the Nissan we see most often in Southern California, and it has had more key-related developments than almost any other model in the lineup. Early Rogues from 2008 to 2013 used a proximity smart key with a standard fob design. The switchblade key generation that followed became the subject of an NHTSA recall affecting roughly 700,000 Nissan SUVs: the folding blade could rotate in the ignition under a heavy keychain, posing a risk of the engine shutting off while driving. The dealer fix involved gluing the blade open permanently, which solved one problem while creating another, since the glued fob became difficult to open for battery changes without cracking the shell.

Current Rogue Key Replacement

What is NATS and why does it matter for key replacement? ▼

NATS stands for Nissan Anti-Theft System. It is the immobilizer Nissan has used in various forms since the late 1990s. When you get a replacement key, the new key's chip has to be registered to your vehicle's NATS module before the car will start. A key that is cut to the right blade profile but not programmed into NATS will unlock the door but will not start the engine. We handle the full process, cutting and programming, in a single on-site visit.

After a battery swap some Nissan fobs need to be resynced to the vehicle. Try the standard resync first: sit in the car with all doors closed, insert and remove the key from the door cylinder five times within ten seconds, then press the lock button on the fob. If that does not work the fob may need to be reprogrammed, or there may be a BCM issue that needs a scan tool to diagnose. We handle both on site.

What to Do When Your Nissan Fob Dies

Pull the hidden mechanical key blade out of the fob by sliding the small release latch on the back of the fob to the side, then pulling the blade free from the bottom of the fob.

Use the blade to open the driver door. The key cylinder is behind a small cover at the back of the driver side door handle. Pop the cover off and insert the blade to unlock.

Once inside, hold the dead fob directly against the Start/Stop button. The car has a short-range circuit that reads the chip inside the fob even with a completely dead battery.

Press the brake pedal and press the Start/Stop button normally. On many models you will hear a chime confirming the fob was detected and you have about 10 seconds to complete the start. Some models also have a fob insertion port to the left of the steering wheel that works the same way.
