About Nissan Keys

Nissan key replacement overview in Ventura County

Nissan's Intelligent Key system covers everything from the Altima and Sentra to the Rogue, Frontier, and Pathfinder. We cut and program replacement keys on site across all four generations of Nissan's NATS security system.

From NATS Transponders to Intelligent Key, We Cover Every Nissan Generation

Nissan

Nissan has run four distinct key systems since the 1990s, and the one in your car depends entirely on the model and year. Pre-1997 Nissans used standard mechanical keys with no chip. Starting around 1997 and 1998, the Altima, Maxima, and Pathfinder were among the first US models to adopt Nissan's NATS transponder system, which requires a programmed chip in the key to start the engine. The third generation brought Nissan's Intelligent Key with push-button start, debuting on the Murano and 350Z in 2003 and spreading to mainstream models like the Altima by 2007.

Nissan Current Nissan Key Technology

Current Nissan Key Technology

The current generation, in place on most models since 2018, adds passive hands-free entry and on some newer vehicles supports phone-as-key through the NissanConnect app. We carry the tools for all four generations and program them at your location.

How Nissan Keys Have Changed Over the Years

Nissan Standard Mechanical Key (Pre-1997)
Pre-1997
Standard Mechanical Key
All Datsun-era and early Nissan models used basic metal blade keys with no chip or immobilizer. Cut to code, no programming required. Simple and inexpensive to duplicate.
Nissan NATS Transponder Chip Key (1997 to 2006)
1997 to 2006
NATS Transponder Chip Key
Nissan introduced its NATS immobilizer starting with the 1998 Altima, Maxima, and Pathfinder. Keys look like a standard blade but have an ID46 chip in the plastic head that must be programmed to the car's ECU. A blade cut to the right profile but unprogrammed will not start the engine.
Nissan Intelligent Key with Push-Button Start (2003 to 2017)
2003 to 2017
Intelligent Key with Push-Button Start
Nissan's proximity smart key debuted on the 2003 Murano and 350Z and spread to mainstream sedans like the Altima by 2007. No blade insertion needed for entry or start. Programming requires OBD-II tools and often a NATS PIN code for all-keys-lost situations.
Nissan Advanced PEPS and App-Integrated Key (2018 to Present)
2018 to Present
Advanced PEPS and App-Integrated Key
Current-generation Intelligent Key adds passive hands-free entry and start. Newer models including the Rogue and Ariya support phone-as-key through the NissanConnect app. Ultra-wideband positioning on 2023 and newer models reduces relay attack risk.

Nissan dealers charge $230 to $1,000 or more for key replacement, plus a $100 to $200 diagnostic fee before they start, and towing is required for all-keys-lost situations. We handle the same job on site at your car.

Nissan Key Problems We Fix

Sound familiar? We handle all of these -on site, same day.

Nissan Dead or Weak Fob Battery
Dead or Weak Fob Battery
The most common Nissan key issue by far. Nissan fobs draw a small constant current from the keyless chip, which means batteries typically last two to three years rather than the four or five you might expect. When the battery gets low you will notice reduced range and intermittent detection before it stops working entirely. Most Nissan fobs take a CR2025 battery and the swap takes about two minutes.
Nissan Intelligent Key Not Detected After Battery Swap
Intelligent Key Not Detected After Battery Swap
Swapping the fob battery sometimes causes a Nissan to lose sync with the Intelligent Key system, triggering a 'No Key Detected' warning even though the battery is fresh. This is a resync issue, not a programming failure. In many cases a simple ignition cycle sequence restores communication. If the resync does not take, the fob needs a full reprogram, which we handle on site.
Nissan Switchblade Key Stuck Open or Shell Cracked
Switchblade Key Stuck Open or Shell Cracked
Nissan issued a recall affecting roughly 700,000 SUVs including the Rogue for a switchblade key that could rotate in the ignition. The dealer fix involved permanently gluing the blade open, which made the fob bulky and made battery replacement nearly impossible without prying the case apart. If your switchblade is stuck or the shell is cracked from battery access attempts, we cut and program a clean replacement key on site.
Nissan Unprogrammed Online Fob Does Nothing
Unprogrammed Online Fob Does Nothing
Nissan Intelligent Key fobs require NATS programming to pair with the vehicle. A fob bought online arrives as unregistered hardware and will not unlock the doors or start the car until it goes through the programming process. We cut and program in one visit so you leave with a fully working key.

Nissan Rogue Key Replacement

Nissan

The Rogue is the Nissan we see most often in Southern California, and it has had more key-related developments than almost any other model in the lineup. Early Rogues from 2008 to 2013 used a proximity smart key with a standard fob design. The switchblade key generation that followed became the subject of an NHTSA recall affecting roughly 700,000 Nissan SUVs: the folding blade could rotate in the ignition under a heavy keychain, posing a risk of the engine shutting off while driving. The dealer fix involved gluing the blade open permanently, which solved one problem while creating another, since the glued fob became difficult to open for battery changes without cracking the shell.

Nissan Current Rogue Key Replacement

Current Rogue Key Replacement

If you have a Rogue from that era and the fob is damaged or the blade is causing ignition issues, we cut and program a clean replacement on site. The current generation Rogue from 2018 onward uses a standard proximity smart key and is one of the most common key replacement jobs we handle.

What to Do When Your Nissan Fob Dies

1
Nissan fob backup step 1

Pull the hidden mechanical key blade out of the fob by sliding the small release latch on the back of the fob to the side, then pulling the blade free from the bottom of the fob.

2
Nissan fob backup step 2

Use the blade to open the driver door. The key cylinder is behind a small cover at the back of the driver side door handle. Pop the cover off and insert the blade to unlock.

3
Nissan fob backup step 3

Once inside, hold the dead fob directly against the Start/Stop button. The car has a short-range circuit that reads the chip inside the fob even with a completely dead battery.

4
Nissan fob backup step 4

Press the brake pedal and press the Start/Stop button normally. On many models you will hear a chime confirming the fob was detected and you have about 10 seconds to complete the start. Some models also have a fob insertion port to the left of the steering wheel that works the same way.

Nissan Owners on Our Service

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."

Gordon Harada
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"

Traci Thomas
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
