First Generation (C11)
OBD-II programming is required for this generation, so there is no shortcut around professional equipment. Your Versa uses a standard transponder key with an ID46 chip and the NATS immobilizer system. No remote buttons, no battery to worry about. Just a solid key that needs to be cut and programmed to your car's computer.
Second Generation (C11 Facelift / Versa Note)
On-board programming makes this one straightforward. Nissan upgraded to a remote head key with an ID46 (PCF7936) chip, a high-security blade, and three buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk. It runs on a CR2025 battery. Still uses the NATS immobilizer, but the programming procedure is faster with the right PIN code and tools.
Second Generation Sedan (CM/NC18)
On-board programming applies here too, same as the hatchback. This sedan-specific chassis shares its key system with the Sentra of the same era: ID46 (PCF7936) chip, high-security blade, three-button remote head, CR2025 battery. If you have the sedan version, the key and programming are identical to the Versa Note generation above.
Third Generation (N18)
Server-based authentication changed the game for this generation. Your Versa now uses a smart proximity key with a PCF7953 (ID47/HITAG3) chip, a laser-cut emergency blade, four buttons, and push-button start. It takes a CR2032 battery. Programming requires Nissan server access, which means more time and specialized tools, but we handle it on-site.
Which Key Does Your Versa Use?
A simple metal key with a chip inside the head. No buttons, no battery. You turn it in the ignition like a traditional key, but the NATS system reads the chip before it lets the engine start.
Your key and remote are built into one piece. Three buttons on the fob for lock, unlock, and trunk. The blade is a high-security cut that is thicker and more precise than the older style.

This key stays in your pocket. Four buttons, push-button start, and a hidden laser-cut emergency blade inside the fob in case the battery dies. The car detects the key when you walk up.

NATS Immobilizer Failure
People blame the starter when a 2007-2019 Versa cranks but won't fire. Nine times out of ten, NATS isn't recognizing the transponder. Chip signal weakens or the ECM loses sync. We reprogram the key on-site under 30 minutes. Stuck in Oxnard? (805) 790-8162.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
On a 2012-2019 Versa with a dead remote, we check the battery contacts inside the fob. CR2025s in these remote heads drain fast, sometimes in months, from poor contacts or internal shorts. Fresh cell is a quick fix; corroded contacts means we swap the shell.

Can You Program a Versa Key Yourself?
You can program the remote lock and unlock functions yourself using the ignition cycle method, but only if you already have a working key. The transponder chip that actually starts the engine requires professional OBD-II programming. So you can pair a remote at home, but you cannot make a new starting key without us.
Same deal as the earlier generation. The ignition cycle procedure lets you program remote buttons if you have a working key. Transponder programming still requires professional tools and a PIN code. If you lost all your keys, there is no DIY path.
No self-programming option exists for these years. The advanced NATS immobilizer and smart key system require diagnostic tools like Nissan CONSULT or server-based programming equipment. This is a professional-only job, no workaround.
