2020 Nissan Versa
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to just adding a spare?

More. Sometimes a lot more. When you have a working key, adding a spare is a registration job. When every key is gone, the system has to be fully reset and new keys enrolled from scratch. The process takes longer and the procedure is more involved. On the 2020 Versa specifically, all-keys-lost requires diagnostic equipment and a timed registration sequence. There's no shortcut. Dealer quotes for this situation on late-model Intelligent Key Nissans regularly land in territory that surprises people.

Q: Are aftermarket fobs for the 2020 Versa worth buying?

The fob itself, maybe. The programming, no. You can find fob shells and aftermarket remotes online for less than OEM. Some of them are fine hardware. But the 2020 Versa's Intelligent Key system still needs professional diagnostic equipment to enroll any fob, aftermarket or OEM. The chip inside has to be registered to the vehicle's immobilizer. There's no workaround on that.

Q: My 2020 Versa shows a key warning on the dash even though the fob battery is new. What's going on?

A few things can cause that. First, check the battery orientation. CR2032 cells are easy to seat backwards and the car won't read the fob at all if polarity is off, even with a brand-new cell. If the battery is seated correctly and you're still getting a key-not-detected warning, look at the contacts inside the fob. Corrosion or a slightly bent contact tab will give you the same symptom as a dead battery.

Q: I only have one key for my 2020 Versa. Is it worth getting a spare before something goes wrong?

Yes. Genuinely one of the better things you can do as a one-key owner. The 2020 Versa is a generation where the key replacement process requires programming equipment no matter what. If that one key breaks, gets lost, or stops being detected, you are looking at an all-keys-lost job, which is more involved and costs more than simply adding a spare while a working key is already present.

2020 Nissan Versa Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Over in North Ranch, a woman had one key to her 2020 Versa and it had been that way since she bought it used. The plan to get a spare never happened, and one afternoon she pulled the fob out of a tight jacket pocket and the housing cracked clean along the seam. The blade was fine but the fob body split in two and the car stopped detecting it.

She called me before she called a tow. Good call.

When I got to her place the fob was in two pieces in a sandwich bag, which is exactly where it should be. The internal components were still intact. I was able to read the key data off the existing fob, which meant I could register a new key without treating it as an all-keys-lost job. That distinction matters because all-keys-lost takes longer and costs more. If she'd thrown the broken fob away, we'd have been starting from scratch.

I cut two new blades, built out two complete fobs, enrolled both through the OBD port, and walked every function: lock, unlock, door handle touch, and the start button. Both keys saw the car immediately.

About 45 minutes start to finish, parked in her driveway. She went from a cracked fob in a bag to two working Intelligent Keys. The dealer had quoted her a number that made her stomach drop, and she'd already called them. This was way less than that, done the same afternoon, without towing anywhere.

Keep the broken pieces. Even a cracked fob with intact internals can save you a significant amount of money on the job.

Nissan Versa Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What's the cheapest way to replace my 2020 Versa key?▼

Call a mobile locksmith first. Nissan dealers price Intelligent Key replacements with separate line items: the fob, the key cutting, the programming labor, and the diagnostic scan. That adds up fast, and you're scheduling days out and potentially arranging a tow if you have no working key. With EZ Car Keyz, the fob, the blade, and the programming are one job, done at your location in North Ranch or wherever the car is.
