It depends on the model and year. Classic Series and early Defender models use standard mechanical blades with no electronics. Transponder chip keys were introduced around 1995 starting with the Range Rover P38A and Discovery, using an ID 46 chip. Smart proximity keys with push-to-start arrived around 2006 on the L322 Range Rover and rolled out to the rest of the lineup through 2012. Yes, for most Range Rover models. We use JLR-compatible programming tools that handle the full lineup from the early P38A through current L460 models. For 2018 and newer Range Rovers we use an OBD-based bypass process that does not require module removal. All-keys-lost situations on post-2022 models with Ultra-Wideband systems may have additional steps, but we assess that upfront before starting the job so you know what to expect.

Relay theft is a method where thieves use two devices to amplify your key fob's signal from inside your home and relay it to the car, tricking it into unlocking and starting without the physical key ever leaving your house. Land Rovers with keyless entry have been heavily targeted this way, particularly Range Rover Sport, Discovery, and Velar models from 2010 through 2022. JLR issued free BCM security updates for 2018 and newer vehicles that significantly reduce this vulnerability. If you have a 2018 or newer Land Rover that has not received the update, contact a JLR retailer to schedule it at no charge.

In most cases, yes. For Discovery 4, LR4, and 2013 through 2022 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models, we can handle all-keys-lost on site using OBD tools without removing any modules. For older models like the L322 Range Rover and L319 Discovery 4, the process may involve a security PIN and additional steps but is still typically doable at your location. We will tell you upfront what is involved before we start the job.

The most common cause is a dead CR2032 battery. All current Land Rover proximity fobs use this battery, and it typically lasts two to three years under normal use. Southern California heat can accelerate drain. If a new battery does not restore function, the next step is checking whether the Keyless Vehicle Module fuse has blown, which is a known issue on 2020 through 2024 Defenders. After that we look at whether the fob has lost sync with the vehicle, which can happen after a battery change and requires a reprogramming step.

Hold the fob directly against the push-to-start button and press the brake at the same time, then press the start button as normal. The car's proximity antenna will detect the fob's passive transponder even with a fully dead battery. On some models there may also be a spot near the steering column. Once you are moving, replace the CR2032 battery as soon as possible. Press the side release button on the fob to pop out the emergency key blade first, then pry the case open at the seam with a coin and swap the battery. No reprogramming is needed after a battery change.

For 2011 through 2018 models using the KOBJTF10A platform, compatible aftermarket keys are available and we can program them on site. For 2019 and newer models, Land Rover's proximity fob architecture is more tightly locked to the vehicle, and third-party keys can be unreliable or incompatible.
